The 2010 Winter Solstice/Lunar Eclipse: A Global Tuning Fork

The 2010 Winter Solstice not only coincided with a Full Moon Total Eclipse but the date of the Solstice amounted to 3.3.3 (21.12.2001 reduces to 3.3.3 via Theosophical Addition) and further reduces to the number 9 (3 +  3 + 3 = 9). While studying the various details of this particular and spectacular display of Cosmic Harmony, it began to occur to me as the equivalent of a Tuning Fork struck across the globe.

As always, the December Solstice completes the 4-armed Cardinal Cross of the Earth's year and marks off successful passage through 9 of the 12 months of the Tropical Zodiac (3 out of 4 quadrants). The triadic structure of this Solstice date 21.12.2010 (3 + 3 + 3 = 9) emphasizes, draws out and lodges in our awareness, a harmonious synthesis and synchronicity between the Trinity/Circle of 9, and the Cardinal Cross of the 12 month Tropical year.  Looking at the image below, the reader can perhaps appreciate the perfect alignment that is the foundation of the Earth's year and our own number system which we have inherited from Vedic civilization. 
This is a simplified version of Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet's Gnostic Circle which represents the recovery of Vedic knowledge in our own civilization and an open invitation for the individual and human collective to properly attune to, align with and harmonize with the One 'Song' or Uni-Verse of Creation.
The Vedic Seers who extolled and established the value and usefulness of these basic measurements of Time and Space, understood that the Divine Triadic Self -- simultaneously Transcendent, Cosmic and Individual -- evolves and expresses its Self in cycles of Time and Space with a precision that can be witnessed by those who are properly attuned or oriented. In the Vedic mind, the 'apocalypse' or the uncovering of the hidden Sun, Light, and Truth-Consciousness-Bliss was achieved or won by those who journeyed through the Earth's Year and larger cycles of time in tune with the very real structures of Time and Space. For the Rishi it was simple enough: the intricate and resounding rhythms and rhymes of the Divine Soul's dynamic expression can not be heard when the true order is not observed and can be heard when the true order is observed.

In addition to the coincidence of the Eclipse/Solstice falling on a '3 + 3 + 3 = 9' date, the total eclipse lasted 72 minutes. 72 is not only a multiple of both 9 and 12, it is also the number of years in one degree of the 25,920 year Precession of the Equinoxes. 72 minutes equals 4,320 seconds. This is interesting because in Vedic India the basic unit for measuring out the Precession and larger cycles of evolution was the Yuga equaling 432,000 seconds of degrees of celestial arc (i.e. one third of the 360 degree Precession) according to Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet. On the December 2010 Solstice/Eclipse, a harmony of Sun, Moon, Earth and Tropical Zodiac which last happened in 1638 (372 years ago), Ms. Norelli-Bachelet (herself age 72 at the time) set off from her home in the Palani Hills of India for Tirumala, Andhra Pradesh where she was invited to present a paper at the First National Conference on Panchanga Ganitam (Calendar Calculation). Her paper [see LINK] strongly called for the recognition of and realignment with the Tropical Zodiac as the true Vedic Calendar, not the Sidereal or Constellational Year as measured by most so-called 'Vedic' astrologers in India. As is, modern-day Indian astrologers celebrate a calendar (panchanga) that slips further and further behind the Tropical Year. The current slippage is 23 days.

From a post-conference report given by Ms. Norelli-Bachelet, it seems that there was no acknowledgment that such a special Lunar Eclipse falling on a (9-powered) day that much of the world celebrated as entrance into the Cardinal Sign of Capricorn/Makar on the eve of their Calendar reform conference could be a SIGN from the Earth and Her Luminaries (the Sun and Moon) that the time has come for Indians to correct the distortion which mistakenly encourages people to celebrate entrance into Capricorn/Makar in mid-January. Thankfully, as with the temporary eclipse of the Moon’s/Sun’s light as seen on 21 December 2010, the eclipse of the true measure or knowledge of the Year is bound to give way to the true measure/knowledge.

Additional Notes: In the following quote from The Secret of the Veda, Sri Aurobindo refers to the sacred (i.e. sacrificial) 12 month year 'in its fixed seasons'. This statement alone from the greatest sage India has seen in Ages, should give Indians serious pause to consider the error of the slippage of their calendar. The sidereal (nirayana) calendar that is used to calculate the sacrificial or holy calendar today in India has no 'fixed seasons'.  The Earth’s 'fixed seasons' define and measure out the Tropical Year/Zodiac.
‘…Night holds hidden in her bosom her luminous sister; this life of our ignorance taught by the gods in their veiled human working prepares the birth of the divine Dawn so that, sped forth, she may manifest the supreme creation of the luminous Creator [Surya]. For the divine Dawn is the force or face of Aditi; she is the mother of the gods; she gives them birth into our humanity in their true forms no longer compressed into our littleness and veiled to our vision.
But this great work is to be done according to the ordered gradations of the Truth, in its FIXED SEASONS, by the twelve months of the sacrifice, by the divine years of Surya Savitri. Therefore there is a constant rhythm and alternation of night and dawn, illuminations of the Light and periods of exile from it, openings up of our darkness and its settling upon us once more, till the celestial Birth is accomplished and again till it is fulfilled in its greatness, knowledge, love and power.'  [bold emphasis and capitalization added]

The Yugas & the Precession of the Equinoxes

[Below is explanation of the Yuga as a unit of (one-third of) the Precession of the Equinoxes that was originally published on 7 November 2006 at; and below that are excerpts regarding the 4-3-2 or 2-3-4 structure of the Yugas, Zodiac and Precession from The Gnostic Circle that I am adding to further illuminate the subject matter.]

Dear Bejoy, Mata Patrizia [Norelli-Bachelet] asked me to address your calculations ... and I would be happy to be of assistance. The traditional timescale of the yugas is as follows:

Satya (4) Yuga or Krita Yuga - 1,728,000 years
Treta (3) Yuga - 1,296,000 years
Dvapara (2) Yuga - 864,000 years
Kali Yuga (1) - 432,000 years

The Total of all this adds up to 4,320,000 years (or 10 Kali Yugas). And that is what is generally taken to be a complete cycle of the Yugas.

What Mata Patrizia is suggesting is that the figure of the Kali Yuga 432,000 (also the radius of the Sun) is the measurement that needs to be first understood in arcseconds. From that re-adjustment in seeing, everything else becomes clear. Then the Kali Yuga is seen as 120 degrees of the circle - one third or 120 degrees of the Precession of the Equinoxes (or 4 Astrological Ages).

With this adjustment, the Kali Yuga needs to be seen as a Unit... like the number ONE is a unit in the circle of NINE numbers (as in the Enneagram and as portrayed in Mata Patrizia's Gnostic Circle - see When one adds up 1 + 2 + 3 + 4, one gets the figure 10. But if one understands the Laws of the Circle, by which the Circle is equivalent to NINE (not 10), then one understands that it is 2 + 3 + 4 Yugas that must be the calculation of the Cycle. This knowledge is contained in the 432,000 figure itself. There is no ONE in the figure. There is only the 2 the 3 and the 4 accompanied by three ZEROS's.

The reason you have come up with 3 and 1/3 revolutions (Precessions) in your calculations, is that you have not 'seen' yet that the Kali Yuga functions as a 'Hidden One.' When you understand that, I think everything will fall into place. Then one sees that the system of the Yugas are describing THREE Precessions or 3 x 25,920 years.

Does this make any sense to you? It's all about understanding the language of the Circle. Its language is 9. Its 9 Integers are One Unit each. Please let me know if there is anyway I can assist your comprehension in these matters.

There are then the numbers 4, 3, and 2, which are the very digits of the kali measurement: 432,000. They are, as well, the most important numbers in the structure of symbols: 2 equals the Line, 3 equals the Triangle, and 4 equals the Square. As per the 24 December post, Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet's (Thea's) Panchanga Ganitam Conference presentation (which began with the above quote by Sri Aurobindo) was webcast live on the morning of 25 December 2010 from Tirumala, India. I managed to get a few blurry pictures off of my computer. Am hoping that readers (who are so moved) will please contact the Conference organizers and request that they make the footage available on YouTube so that people across the world can contemplate the knowledge presented.

Panchanga Ganitam Conference 2010 (a stab at Hindu Calendar Reform)

I just caught a glimpse of the First National Conference on Panchanga Ganitam being held 24 -26 December 2010 in Tirumala, India. Apparently it is being webcast live. I have enquired as to when Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet will be scheduled to read her paper [Link HERE to read full text], and will announce it here if I find out so that others who are interested may watch.

[UPDATE: It seems Patrizia is speaking in Tirumala (India) on the morning of Dec 25th ... No specific time has been given but there is a morning session from 9 am - 11 am. That converts to 7:30-9:30 pm DECEMBER 24th for PST, and 10:30-12:30 for EST. (another session starts at 11:30 am in Tirumala).]

A Panchanga is a Hindu calendar [see Wikipedia]. There are numerous Panchangas that people follow in India and Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet is speaking to the effect that the real Vedic Year that should be adopted as the Hindu calendar is the Tropical Zodiac, based as it is on the four cardinal pillars of the equinoxes and solstices. [See Unity and the Hindu Samaj]. Ganitam, I believe means mathematics.*

It seems that much of the presentations won't be in English. Maybe they will translate the transcripts at some point.

2010 December Solstice Full Moon Total Lunar Eclipse Synchronicity

Whereas I am happy to see such a beautiful celebration and announcement of this unique December Solstice, the last message in the video -- 'You can create unity' -- seems bizarre to me. As if Unity was not a FACT of existence that the mind (as presently constituted) has a hard time seeing or experiencing.

Celebrating the formative, cardinal or creative points of the Earth's year (i.e. the  Solstices and the Equinoxes)  as a means of unifying energies of the collective does have quite an illustrious history (as mentioned in the quote below). But from what I have understood of Vedic wisdom, observing and 'Traveling' the Tropical year is a way, a path or journey towards developing a consciousness of the Unity of Creation rather than creating unity itself. Properly oriented within this journey, we participate in, observe, celebrate and bring forward  in our awareness that which holds us ALL in Unity.

The Tropical Year is our common journey. To be unconscious of IT is to be unconscious of the unified creation, the unified material existence or  unified field of which we are an intricate part. To ignore or attempt to transcend this four-pillared foundation of the Self represents a loss of Knowledge ... and a very literal waste of Time.
'... it was through the calendar in use by all ancient societies, from the Vedic to the Egyptian, the Persian, the Greek and finally the Roman. They all made use of the cosmic harmony to unify the energies of the conquered around a common system. ...

Pirates of the Royal Ship (Strife in Auroville & the Sri Aurobindo Ashram)

In a November exchange between Paulette Hadnagy of Auroville and Sunil of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram on Savitri Era Open Forum, Paulette wrote that the public (internet) infighting that has been sparked by Peter Heehs 2008 book has been a poisonous atmosphere for sadahks. She asked, ‘… who will ever want to come and live at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, with all that you people are spewing in the internet? Even Auroville is affected. People do ask questions.'

My first thought was, “Hallelujah people are asking questions! They should be asking questions. Specifically, they should be asking the question, ‘Where has the soul of the Integral and Supramental knowledge that used to inhabit the Sri Aurobindo Ashram fled to?’ And if they truly search with an open heart and mind, they will find the answer.

Paulette also wrote in reference to the forces she feels are destroying the spirit of the Ashram, 'Pirates can assault the royal ship and grab it, but this doesn’t make of them a king!'

But what happens if a group of hopeful yogis imagine that they have inherited the ‘royal ship’ when in actuality they know nothing of its true form, dimensions, dynamics, range, potentialities and destination? What if whole truth of the ship is actually beyond their comprehension, yet they still try to control its movements. This classic and miserable state in which the ignorant/egoic self possessively controls, or rather thinks it controls the Vessel, has as its trophy or monument, the Auroville Temple.

Before leaving her body, the Mother left behind as her greatest legacy, the blueprints of her temple, the Matrimandir. What hardly a soul noticed was that the Mother's blueprints simultaneously laid out the design of the Royal Vessel (i.e. the Divine Self) and IT’s Divine Journey (i.e. the Sanatana Dharma of Being and Becoming). As a result of this ignorance the design and dimensions were altered without giving heed to the protests of Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet who knew it was a grave mistake to alter the sacred geometries of the Mother’s Temple design. And now, 37 years later, there is still no scale-tipping, world-altering roar from those who espouse their love for Sri Aurobindo and the Mother for the REAL THING, the real Temple, the real Vessel, the real of knowledge of Self and the real relation-SHIP we are in with the One and the Many.  

Plenty of efforts have been made to reveal the astounding rhyme, reason and significance of the Sacred Vessel/Vedic Temple that Mother dropped into their laps with minimal explanation. [See the Matrimandir Action Committee’s website and The New Way, Volumes 1 & 2] But the majority have covered their ears, refusing to let the new information rock their boat, mistaking their refusal as an honorable defense against asuras, pirates, forces of darkness, etc. Their ‘love’ for Sri Aurobindo and the Mother is a sentimental and rigid attachment to their own hold on or grasp of the Yoga rather than a fluid, humble and open-hearted receptivity to the Supramental Play that has continued to SUCCEED after Sri Aurobindo and the Mother left their bodies. The strife in Auroville and in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram is the necessary and inevitable culmination of this lowly vein of ‘love’.     

It will be a refreshing and encouraging day when students of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother’s Yoga begin to discuss the Mother's actual legacy, her actual vision, her actual Temple design and what that means in terms of the dynamic progression of the Supramental Manifestation rather than fighting over control of a Royal Ship that they know not the head or tail nor even the whereabouts of.

[This article in which Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet discusses the history of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and Auroville and the reasons why "both ‘fields’ have lost their relevancy for the Integral and Supramental Yogas", was first published November 13th, 2010 on Savitri Era Open Forum as a response to a recent slew of SEOF posts regarding the ongoing controversy in the Ashram, including: 'This rotting vegetation that calls itself the Sri Aurobindo Ashram' ('Is the Sri Aurobindo Ashram-Soul dead?' by Prof. Kamal Das with comments by Paulette Hadnagy, Kamal Das, R.Y. Deshpande); and 'I happen to know a lot about what’s going on here behind the scenes' (Sri Aurobindo on the ‘Evil Persona’ by Paulette Hadnagy). The most recent call for government intervention (mentioned in the article title) is a law suit filed against the Sri Aurobindo Trust and its five trustees by five Sri Aurobindo Ashram inmates as discussed on SEOF and in the October 2010 issue of Auroville Today (see PDF or]

The intervention of the Government was sought in the 1970s. Satprem and his group sought to wrest control of the Ashram. At that time there were people of stature on the Board, several if not all of whom were appointed by the Mother herself. These were not supramentally-realised souls; but they were loyal to the Mother in every fibre of their beings. Thus, the storm was weathered even though the Emergency was on and Sir CPN Singh was in a position to bring the Trustees to their knees. Those of us in the Ashram at the time remember the periodic IT raids as part of the strategy.
       Dyumanbhai, one of the finest trustees, used to visit me from time to time. On one occasion I said to him, ‘Surely they will not find anything.’ His wise reply was, ‘If they want to find something, they will.’ I later understood how this could be ‘arranged’. But it did not work for Sir CPN because Indira Gandhi was fully involved and would not take such a step without being convinced that it was the Mother’s will. And she was not. Then she lost the elections in 1977 and as far as the Ashram matter was concerned, the attempt was put in deep freeze. One of the Trustees at the time of her loss was jubilant. I sent a letter to the Board warning them that it was foolish to exult: she would return.
       Meanwhile, having failed in the first attempt – and bear in mind that the Ashram was considered the Prize, not Auroville which was thought to be a basket case – the sights of this group were turned to Auroville in a sense forced by the prevailing circumstances. The residents, then and now, had no experience in these matters and were very easily manipulated. I was in close contact with Sir CPN, not because of the politics of the situation at all, but because he and Indira were sympathetic to my attempts to have the Mother’s original plan of the Matrimandir’s inner chamber adopted – nothing had been built yet. But then Sir CPN ‘turned’. He joined the Satprem camp. The dispute was over ownership of the Mother’s tapes, her recorded conversations with Satprem over the years. One Trustee in particular played a damaging role at the time and his arrogant dislike of Indira took its toll; I witnessed Sir CPN’s ire over the actions of this Trustee. It was unfortunate and totally avoidable.
       At the time I wrote to Sir CPN: Do not allow yourself to be pulled into ego clashes; remember why you were put in the position your have (vis-à-vis the Ashram – that is to have the Mother’s plan adopted). But politicians will be politicians to their last breath. In the same letter I wrote that he would soon be put in a position to dictate terms in Auroville. Indeed, this did come to pass. Within a few months a petition was sent to the Government of India, signed by all its residents, seeking to have Sir CPN appointed the sole interlocutor in charge of Auroville affairs.
       Surely you will recall the genesis of this development. A group in Auroville wanted to oust the Sri Aurobindo Society. They set up their own administration, registered it, went to court, and finally handed Auroville over to the Government of India on a platter – a move everyone knew was totally against the Mother’s explicitly stated wish.
       I was in touch with Indira Gandhi at the time. She knew the Mother’s exact ‘plan’ for the Work (also mathematically enshrined in her original plan of the Inner Chamber in design and number). And so the take-over – at the perverse insistence of Aurovilleans – was temporary, a sort of custodianship for five years, to be extended for another two if required. Her idea was that the Mother’s ‘plan’ could not possibly fail. She gave a specific precautionary time period to allow for this to happen. Unfortunately, SAS was effectively removed from de facto stewardship.
       On her return to power the camp that still lusted after control of the Ashram swung into action. She wrote  to me wondering what to do. My reply was simple: Keep out. If the Ashram must die it must do so on its own. Do not allow the Government of India to bear this responsibility. Indira heeded my advice in full. Since her letter asked specific questions, I know that my reply to those specifics irked certain quarters. They have never forgiven me!
       This story forms a part of my new book, Volume Two of The Tenth Day of Victory. It is an eye-opener in the present context because everyone is seeing only the surface of things, never the true struggles and the goals. Indeed, finally the architect-in-charge of the Inner Chamber construction, Piero Cicionesi, had his way, defiantly, knowing the full implications, having the fullest documentation of the original plan and the Mother’s recorded talks on the issue of her original to understand without a shadow of a doubt what she wanted done (see Chronicles of the Inner Chamber, Nonetheless, mystifyingly he held sway: the Inner Chamber stands as a perfect shadow of the Mother’s original; in other words, an architectural representation of the Ego and not the Soul. This is not just rhetoric; it is provable by the science of Number and Geometry.
       Today, Auroville has been handed over to the Government and therefore has no relevance in the Yoga that it was to house, the ‘field’ or the ‘laboratory’ for the Supramental Yoga, just as the Ashram was the laboratory for the Integral. All had been carefully planned, arranged, documented. Now its only relevance is to demonstrate what the ego produces when the Soul is absent. The Mother had devised a means to establish the Soul at the centre of the township for when she would no longer be embodied. But this was ignorantly rejected by all. The consolation is that she also arranged a ‘contingency plan’ the moment in January of 1970 when she understood the nature of the camp that simply would not have it her way under any circumstances. That Contingency Plan has been more than successful. Yet all of you flock to the Matrimandir like sheep to worship this Shadow! We must ask, how can it be otherwise?
       Now the same attempt is being made to hand the Ashram over to the Government. This loss would not be the same now as then it was because both ‘fields’ have lost their relevancy for the Integral and Supramental Yogas. The latter is undeniable when it is present. Only the Ignorance is capable of denying the obvious; and unfortunately the world is still governed by the Ignorance whose stamp is left everywhere, most lamentably in the corridors of the Mother’s work. But Gnosis bears no such stamp: it is integral, self-evident, and irrefutable. Above all, it is its own authority. It needs not outside imprimatur. The Contingency Plan has covered all bases and the work is done… ‘While the wisemen talk and sleep’
       In January of 1979, exactly 9 years after the Mother ‘threw in the towel’ as it were and handed the construction over to the Divine Consciousness to ‘sort out the people who could build’, the Ashram destroyed the only book in existence, The New Way, Volumes 1 & 2, in which as part of the Contingency Plan the cosmic credentials of the 9th Avatar of Vishnu are detailed, those whom I call Evolutionary Avatars. In the same volumes the Mother’s original plan was minutely explained as the verification by her of these credentials. As irrefutable as this Book of Gnosis was, the Press, and only the Press – not the Ashram Trustees – arranged matters so that they could destroy the Book. You tell me what that says about a centre that is supposed to worship Mahasaraswati, the Goddess of our Age? Again, could it be otherwise?
       Fast forward to 2010. We have a dispute over another book of absolutely puny significance in the history of Sri Aurobindo’s mission; and yet people are ready to tear the world apart over this nothingness.
       No, I stand corrected. There is one point that should have driven all of you to distraction – and yet there was not a proper and sensible whimper from anyone. This refers to Peter Heehs’s statement about the question of Sri Aurobindo’s avatarhood. His statements are not only incorrect in their conclusions but they reveal that even after decades of residence in India this individual never imbibed the spirit of his adopted home and the importance of the Epic Heros in its history and culture. The Dasavataras are the backbone of the Eternal Dharma; and without Sri Aurobindo, the 9th/10th in the Line, that spinal column must crumble – i.e., the end of the Dharma.
       I firmly declare, with ample published works to support what I state, that the very most important aspect of Sri Aurobindo’s life was his avatarhood – as an emanation of Vishnu and not just any of the dozens of ‘avatars’ that float around today. His cosmic credentials substantiate that he is in direct line from Sri Ram (7th), Sri Krishna (8th) and then Sri Aurobindo (the 9th). This is written in his own symbol, the Mother’s symbol, and the Rig Veda – a trifold combination that only the Supermind could have arranged. Forget the Buddha who finds no place in the Line except as a ‘ruse of the Supreme’. If you do not understand this and all its implications for India and the world, you have understood nothing. Like the Inner Chamber was for the Mother which proved that she was the incarnate Divine Maya, Sri Aurobindo’s cosmic proof of his avatarhood is the only thing that makes sense of his mission as Avatar of the Supermind. Heehs claims he never stated he was an Avatar. Well, he clearly stated the functions of the 7th (Mind), the 8th (Overmind) – and the next in sequence to be the 9th of the Supermind. Who, pray tell, can lay claim to that Knowledge other than Sri Aurobindo? He may not have stated openly ‘I am that One’ because he never needed to state the obvious. Nonetheless, just in case, he wrote his own Epic, realising he could not rely on his followers to grasp the obvious.
       Let me be clear. You do not deal with what you consider heresy or blasphemy by book burning (as Paulette of Auroville has indulged in with great fanfare and pride). You raise the level by an infusion of more Knowledge. To prove the point, my response to Peter Heehs’s book was to counter with proof of Sri Aurobindo’s lineage. I wrote Secrets of the Earth (Aeon Books, 2009) and even sent a copy to the Ashram Board of Trustees on 7 June 2009, accompanied by the following letter:

Respected Gentlemen:

I am sending you herewith a copy of my latest book which I recently had printed because of the damage being done to Sri Aurobindo’s work through the widespread denial of his avatarhood by his own followers. When you read this book, it will be made clear that continuing in this ‘denial mode’, further damage will be done to delay the purpose for which he took birth, in which his avatarhood plays a fundamental role.

I am also attaching a page out of the book so that you will be apprised of certain portions where specific mention is made of these obstructive tactics. It may be that this is done in ignorance; nonetheless, the damage is a fact we cannot deny.

Anyone who takes the time to read this small book can never again deny Sri Aurobindo his birthright. And to repair the damage already done, I suggest you distribute this book through Ashram circuits for the benefit of all his followers who have been influenced by these denials. They should be allowed to judge for themselves on the basis of the objective knowledge the book contains. For information in this regard, please contact the above address and phone number.

       Of course there was never any reply, not even the courtesy of an acknowledgement receipt by a secretary! Such is the fear that grips those of faint heart and no realisation! Should they step down? Voluntarily or by compulsion? But who to replace them with? Another tribe of similar ilk? For who is there who KNOWS – even enough just to know who or what should replace the old?

Is Obama's Adulation of Gandhi in India a Diplomatic Blunder?

'“The impression on the Indian side is every time you meet [Barack Obama], he talks about Gandhi,” said Shekhar Gupta, editor of The Indian Express, a leading English-language newspaper, adding that the repeated references struck some officials as platitudinous.'

The above quote regarding the impression President Obama is making on his first trip to India is slightly humorous, like a political cartoon. Holding up Gandhi as a political and national hero, is just plain bizarre when one considers that Gandhi's ideals are actually somewhat responsible for the partition of India [1] and the current morass between Pakistan and India, and the ongoing turmoil the Kashmir reigon as well. How would the world have fared if the Allies had adopted Gandhi's non-violent strategies in the war against Hitler? Michael Danino addressed these issues in a keynote speech given at Kottayam’s Mahatma Gandhi University January of 2000 [See Link]. He spoke:
'The result of Gandhi’s dogmatic stand on the evil nature of war—a dogma Sri Krishna rebuffs in the Gita—was to be tragic for India. It not only meant an unnecessary postponement of Independence, but it made India’s bloody vivisection unavoidable, even as the Mahatma promised it would happen only “over his dead body” ; it also meant three wars with our neighbour and the continuing war of attrition and terrorism in Kashmir.' 
Danino ended his speach with a quote by Sri Aurobindo, “If one is among the ... seekers of [the] Truth, one has to take sides for the Truth, to stand against the forces that attack it and seek to stifle it. Arjuna wanted not to stand for either side, to refuse any action of hostility even against assailants ; Sri Krishna, who insisted so much on samata, strongly rebuked his attitude and insisted equally on his fighting the adversary. ‘Have samata,’ he said, ‘and seeing clearly the Truth, fight.’ ... It is a spiritual battle inward and outward ; by neutrality and compromise or even passivity one may allow the enemy force to pass and crush down the Truth and its children.” [From Letters on Yoga]

Sri Aurobindo, truly more deserving of the honor of being called India's patriarch, accepted violent force of action as a possibility and often a necessity against oppressers, usurpers or enemies. He was named the most dangerous man in India and thrown in jail for his revolutionary outcries against the tyranny of British rule of India. He was instrumental in liberating India from the British Raj; and serendipitously India's Independence fatefully coincided with Sri Aurobindo's 75th birthday, 15 August 1947.

Obama's certainly knows that Gandhi's philosophy is neither practical nor astute in handling certain global conflicts, including conflicts within the fractured motherland of India. So why try to connect or bond with Indians on the basis of a failed patriarch, responsible for the fracturing of their Motherland?

Like so many heads of state before him, following a well-beaten path of platitudinal diplomacy in India, Obama visited Gandi's ashes, signed the guest book, and paid homage to the failed sentimentality that lies at the roots of India's fractured and weakened state. I do hope some fed-up and knowledgeable contingency of Indians can point Obama in the direction of Sri Aurobindo's more integral and enduring vision on Indian affairs. Perhaps someone will put in his hands a copy of Sri Aurobindo's message to India on 14 August 1947, on the eve of Her Independence. Aurobindo knew that the partition was a backwards solution to achieving harmony and a hindrance to India's future destiny and greatness. He spoke, 'By whatever means, in whatever way, the division must go; unity must and will be achieved, for it is necessary for the greatness of India's future.'

Of course Pakistanis would be outraged if Obama publicly declared an affinity for the philosophies of India's greatest freedom fighter and champion for her un-partitioned glory, especially considering ever more tense situation in Kashmir. But perhaps Indians already feel some outrage that Obama would unwittingly honor Gandhi as their cultural hero, and passivism as their national philosophy, in spite of the real conflicts they face with Pakistan. If the spell cast by of Gandhi is not soon thoroughly broken, Kashmir, the crown jewel of Mother India, will inevitably be amputated from the body of India, as was Pakistan and Bangledesh in 1947. Are Indians going to let this happen? Does Obama think India should let this happen?

This points to the fact that the separation of Muslims was "a direct reactive measure taken in response to the 20 years of metaphysical and caste dominated leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, which touched its practical and maximum zenith during the Congress's 'one party' rule of India."

An academician to the core, Kamran Shahid says, "I did not write this book as a Pakistani nor as an enemy to India. I wanted to publish whatever my conviction was on the partition." It must be tough to keep one's emotions aloof while writing about one's motherland. However, Shahid has successfully done so.

Guru Purnima and other cosmic musings...

On 25 July last, Guru Purnima was celebrated in many parts of the country. Much has been made of its significance in the life of an individual as a day to honour one’s guru, since he or she has the ability to bring the light out from within a sea of darkness that is the normal human condition. This would be the apt imagery of the cosmic significance of Guru Purnima, from where the more commonly-understood sense arose centuries ago. But, herein lies the problem.

These festivals and celebrations at their origin were derived from the cosmic harmony. This would be the harmony of our solar system with its planets orbiting the Sun at different rates of motion. For us the pertinent rhythms to understand are the Earth’s since the entire complex is viewed from this vantage point. The Earth with all her living creatures becomes the centre of the universe, as it were, in order to understand the convergence of these harmonies on this particular point in the System. 
In the specific case of planet Earth we experience that relationship by the flow of the seasons in the course of the year. From very ancient times the year was honoured because it was understood to be akin to a womb – in this case, of Time – within which the days, nights, months, and seasons were nurtured; hence we speak of ‘Mother Earth’ in order to describe this nurturing quality. Allowing the population to partake of the harmony of the Year was the task of sages, and later of temple pundits. That is, the correct timing of rituals had to be established, otherwise the connection with the cosmic harmony would be lost.
Especially important was the division of the year into four quarters, each one marked off by an Equinox or a Solstice – that is, equal or unequal days and nights. Due to the axial tilt of the Earth with respect to the ecliptic plane, which extends from the Sun and within which all the planets orbit the luminary, the four seasons come into being. It can thus be appreciated that this tilt, with its resulting four seasons and measures of day and night, is the most important harmony to understand and honour. The Cardinal Directions/Poles supporting this harmony are East/West/North/South. The southern Pole is the focus of this analysis. It is known in ancient lore as Cosmic Midnight.


Guru Purnima, Light in the Cosmic Darkness
The two items we must focus on regarding Guru Purnima are the Solstices of December and June. The latter is the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, the former the shortest. The shortest day occurs on the December Solstice; its cosmic sense is that the light (as symbolised by the Sun) begins to increase, each day becoming longer from that point onward. Whereas at the June Solstice, increase is reversed and decrease sets in, the days becoming increasingly shorter, or the light of the Sun lessened. Being our harmonic connection to Surya, these rhythms have taken on special meaning on the subcontinent from ancient times. The December Solstice is considered the most auspicious time of the year (Makar Sankranti/Pongal), while at the June Solstice the most ‘inauspicious’ period begins, Adi in Tami Nadu.
There is another Earth/Sun harmony that forms the universal background of Guru Purnima, relevant for both northern and southern hemispheres. This is perihelion and aphelion – when the Earth in toto moves closest to or farthest from the Sun, respectively. Guru Purnima should logically fall during the month of aphelion. In the zodiac, or the ecliptic pathway of the planets divided into twelve, aphelion occurs on 4th or 5th July, or exactly in the middle of the fourth sign Cancer – aptly known as Cosmic Midnight, or the Vedic Diti, Mother of Division and Darkness, given this distance from the luminary.
This is precisely when the Guru enters the scene and replaces the Sun which is then submerged in the deepest midnight darkness. In the planetary family, Guru is Jupiter/Brihaspati, largest of all. That Guru Purnima should be celebrated in Cancer (21-22 June - 22 July), which in astrology is held to be precisely the month of the ‘exaltation’ of Jupiter/Guru as all competent astrologers know, reveals the wisdom that can be gained from observation of the cosmic surround applied to Earth. This wisdom has been incorporated in temple architecture of South India where Jupiter is honoured as Dakshinamurthy, precisely the Lord of the South, because the sign of his ‘exaltation’ is indeed the south Cardinal Pole. He brings Light in the darkness to the whole nation through his southern abode of Exaltation.
From this we appreciate the coherency and homogeneity of the ancient knowledge. It was and remains the only tradition that reveals the sense and purpose of evolution and how the cosmic surround speaks to us of a living and eternal truth – unlike scientific cosmology which meticulously explores the universe but without ever grasping its meaning for the individual and society. Lamentably, on the subcontinent this tradition of the Veda and temple culture is all but lost, as I will endeavour to explain.

The Soul, light in the midnight darkness
Celebration of Guru Purnima is fully cosmic in origin – purposeful and meaningful. As if it were a relay station, with the full Moon (transmitter of the light of the Sun) in Cancer, or Cosmic Midnight, the drama is enacted in each disciple or devotee, regardless of caste or creed. Nor is there any religious/denominational context to the celebration. It is simply an enactment of the harmony of our solar system, exactly as it transpires in the heavens.
This cosmic process is described in each temple in South India. The language employed is Myth because it is the universal language of the soul, common to all people, high and low, near and far. And this Soul is what becomes encased in a womb of darkness in zodiacal Cancer, the Cosmic Midnight beginning on the Solstice, 21-22 June each year.
This fourth sign is also known as Adi in South India and is considered inauspicious. But when the cosmic sense is restored this label in inappropriate. It would be the same as saying that a mother is ‘unclean’ or ‘evil’ (the temptress Eve) when she carries a foetus in her womb. On the contrary, she serves a noble purpose in the Earth’s evolution by offering herself as a channel to propagate the species. Regarding the higher sense and purpose which drives the evolution, Woman is Shakti who propels the process forward, protects it as a womb does, and combats all evil that seeks to destroy the creation she carries within.
In the light of ancient knowledge, Adi is not ‘inauspicious’ but merely ‘gestational’, hidden from view. What is ‘gestated’ must wait the appropriate time for emergence. Thus, the ancients throughout the world considered it to be an indrawn period – not because of any inauspiciousness but because it is preparatory. In the cosmic/evolutionary sense, in Adi what is hidden is the divine Spark that is the soul whose light is but a speck immersed in the nurturing cosmic sea, to be fully born in Cosmic Midday, its opposite pole in the year. Our Earth Year indeed holds unimaginable secrets. Is it any wonder that the Rishis made it the focus of the Sacrifice?
These events are astronomically verifiable. Even a layperson can calculate with reasonable accuracy when the June Solstice occurs. Similarly, Guru Purnima is easily spotted in the heavens. But the problem – a serious one – is that this simple and obvious connection with the celestial harmony has been lost, incongruous as it may seem. It is no longer Guru Purnima of the cosmic harmony.

Science disturbs the Harmony
At the time of Independence, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru instituted the Calendar Reform Committee to look into the prevailing Hindu calendars with a view to bringing about reforms. This was his message to the Committee:
I am glad that the Calendar Reform Committee has started its labours. The government of India has entrusted to it the work of examining the different calendars followed in this country and to submit proposals to the government for an accurate and uniform calendar based on a scientific study for the whole of India. I am told that we have at present thirty different calendars, differing from each other in various ways, including the methods of time reckoning. These calendars are the natural result of our past political and cultural history and partly represent past political divisions in the country. Now that we have attained independence, it is obviously desirable that there should be a certain uniformity in the calendar for our civic, social and other purposes and that this should be based on a scientific approach to this problem.
It is true that for governmental and many other public purposes we follow the Gregorian calendar, which is used in the greater part of the world. The mere fact that it is largely used makes it important. It has many virtues, but even this has certain defects which make it unsatisfactory for universal use.
It is always difficult to change a calendar to which people are used because it affects social practices, but the attempt has to be made even though it may not be as complete as desired. In any event, the present confusion in our own calendars in India ought to be removed. 

I hope that our scientists will give the lead.

The objection I have to the above is that Jawaharlal Nehru selected men for this most important task largely from the scientific community. Indeed, he makes it clear that in his view science is the ‘reliable’ source to set matters right for the Hindu Samaj, to ‘give the lead’. I am astonished that no one complained about this misconception at the time, or even since then. The result is that Hindus are obliged to follow the lead of science in matters wherein it has no competence. The result is that Guru Purnima – and all other festivals, solar and lunar – are celebrated 23 days late; not a few hours or even minutes – bad enough – but a full 23 days! Therefore, we find that Adi, the only month in which Guru Purnima should fall to maintain its cosmic connection and sense, according to these latter-day pundits begins when Adi has actually passed! It should be within 21-22 June and 22-23 July, the same today as during the Sangam Era and the Vedic Age, with no ‘corrections’ required. Instead it is celebrated with the full Moon of an Adi which these scientists claim occurs 23 days later – or after 17 July when the true Adi is actually nearing its end.
Imagine the cosmos as a room. We enter and press the light switch; but nothing happens because the electrical wires ARE NOT CONNECTED. Everything is in place but not connected. The competent electrician was not called in to make the system work. This is exactly what happens when time/wire connections are not made – no power, no light.
There is no sanction for this aberration anywhere in the scriptures; or even by just plain common/cosmic sense. The true Adi is astronomically verifiable; that is, measured on the backdrop of the ecliptic divided into twelve zodiacal sign/months and further divided into four – the four seasons or the Cardinal Poles of Equinoxes and Solstices – east, west, north and south; as eternal as is the cosmic surround.
Nehru’s scientists held different views, as do Nirayana astrologers/pundits today throughout India, who are the ‘authorities’ when temple timings and astrological calculations are required. For these calculations they erroneously project the Earth year onto the circle of fixed stars, called sidereal. According to them the four Cardinal directions/poles may be disregarded entirely as raconteurs of this exquisite cosmic tale because they do not exist in that constellation of distant stars (also erroneously called ‘zodiac’ by science to further confuse the issue). There is no ecliptic there, no plane where the planets journey around the Sun, and hence no Equinoxes or Solstices – the harmony at the basis of all temple architecture and worship. Yet we have allowed this lack of cosmic knowledge to prevail and to ‘turn off the light switch’.

Though dimmed, Temples still hold the Light
Strange as it may seem, every Hindu temple is nonetheless aligned to those four Cardinal Points (which science and Nirayana astrologers discard). That is, the spatial measurement in temple architecture is accurate and honours the cosmic harmony. But when it comes to adding the temporal measurement (turning the light switch on) for every ceremony thereafter, mystifyingly they turn to ‘science’ which now dictates terms to wisemen. No, they claim, the solstice of June does not fall on the longest day of the year but occurs 23 days later! Or else they claim: Of course the solstice occurs on the longest day of the year, but the zodiacal sign Cancer (Cosmic Midnight) must be separated from the solstice, as Makar Sankranti must be separated from the December solstice. Their reasoning is that Cancer is ‘no longer there’ where it once was; it has ‘shifted’ by 23 days. But none realise or will admit that for these ‘corrections’ THEY ARE USING THE WRONG CIRCLE.
Can our Cardinal Poles and their rasis ‘shift’? Yes, but only when Knowledge is absent. Then all ‘lights’ are put out.
According to these ‘pundits’ time bears no intrinsic cosmic connection, much less any sense and purpose. South Cardinal Pole Cancer, equalling Cosmic Midnight, makes no sense to them. So, we are forced to ask, what purpose does it serve to celebrate Guru Purnima at all? Why worship Dakshinamurthy in his temple if that south pole is not honoured in time as well as in space? Time for these scientists is simply relative and can be anything and everything, according to the fashion of the day; unlike in ancient times – and even today for those of the Vision and who have had intimate concourse with Mahakala, with Samvatsar and Samvatsaragni. In Myth it is the union of Parvati and Siva. Until that takes place, Siva lies inert – and meaningless. Motion, the great Dance of Nataraj, is what gives meaning and purpose to the cosmic harmony. And this wealth of Knowledge is conveyed in the zodiac and preserved in Hindu Temples, for all times, for all people. But those who should know better follow material science in matters of high spiritual import like meek lambs.
The result is that Adi for followers of ‘science’ begins on 17 July (when real Adi is almost over) and ends on 17 August. It is interesting to note that the entire Hindu Samaj in the south is obsessed with the ‘inauspiciousness’ of Adi. The faithful rush to complete marriages, projects, purchases and the like ‘before Adi begins’, when it actually began on the June Solstice, 23 days earlier. So, these events all transpire right in the middle of that ‘inauspiciousness’ everyone seeks to evade! We have the Nirayanis to thank for this absurdity.

The Choice is Ours: Knowledge or Superstition

But, let me be absolutely clear. There is no dire misfortune that awaits followers of the material sciences and Nirayana astrology which I term appropriately post-Vedic, for this transgression of the knowledge. Such fears are simply based on superstition. I do not mean that there are no consequences from following unquestioningly a false lead. Surely there are, but it is not misfortune in the sense we understand the term – i.e., bad luck or some such calamity. It is, simply put, ignorance. We chose to align ourselves with Cosmic Ignorance rather than Cosmic Truth which is the Vedic/Sangam way. But ponder this: Might not ignorance be the cause of all calamity, and loss of the Knowledge the root of all superstition?

What emerges when we delve deeply into these matters is that India is maintaining the tradition in name only. Because the zodiac, with its high knowledge content, has been discarded in favour of a senseless and purposeless system imposed by material science, we must agree with Sri Aurobindo when he wrote, ‘…the soul of knowledge has fled from its coverings.’

I have studied almanac literature published by well-meaning individuals who seek to restore the Sayana system in lieu of the Nirayana currently in use. They consider the former Vedic; at the same time they reject the use of the zodiac as it is known universally, with its pictographs and hieroglyphs, claiming that it is not Vedic but was brought into India by the Greeks. I have refuted these claims elsewhere and need not repeat the exercise. Suffice to state that there is an exoteric or external tradition in the Rig Veda, and an esoteric doctrine for initiates. The difference can be gauged precisely by recognition of the zodiac used for the initiation described in the Veda. Those who do not recognise that secret knowledge remain in the outer corridors and fail to understand what India has had the privilege of preserving for the world.
But surely we have the right to question why the entire temple culture of South India is based on that very zodiac they reject as ‘un-Vedic’. Were the sages of the days when temple culture was established so shallow and ignorant that they mistook a ‘foreign import’ for Vedic lore?

The contrary is true: the Indian temple preserves VEDIC LORE, and that is ‘written’ in the zodiac, and only the zodiac in use throughout the world. Is it not marvellous to realise that the ancient Rishis had the foresight to carry forward the tradition in such a way that when just the right time would arrive that Veda would serve not just India but the whole world?

To prove the point once again, in going through my collection of articles and letters on Indian temples today, I came across a Letter to the Editor from Dr. A. L. Paul Pandian, to The Hindu; it was written on 9.2.1977, 33 years ago. Since it explains the importance of Cancer and Capricorn and their respective solstices, in a sense the main theme of this article, I am reproducing his letter in full: ‘Many of our South Indian Temples are sun-oriented in their structural plan. In some temples the sunlight directly illuminates the presiding deity on some days. One of the peculiar Gopurams in South India is the Tanjavur Brahadeswarar temple central gopuram which has a square base unlike the common rectangular bases in other temples. This gopuram is commonly called as “shadowless” or [a] gopuram which does not cast a shadow. Every object is bound to cast a shadow due to the apparent movement of sun towards north and south of equator. However, the shadow of objects in between Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn are within their bases twice in the year in the exact noon. In my opinion, the peculiarity of the Tanjavur gopuram is the fact that the shadow of the monolithic stone and the kalasam never falls on the floor of the temple but lies within the square base of the gopuram throughout the year at noon. It will be worthwhile to observe the shadow of the kalasam every week starting from December 21 till June 21 of 1978 (summer solstice) to establish this fact.’
The main feature of Capricorn and for which reason it is the sign of the Golden Age or the Satya Yuga, is that, just as Dr Pandian mentions, the Sun casts no shadows at this highest Cosmic Midday point. That is what defines the Satya Yuga: shadowless; and this was a fact incorporated in 1000 CE in this marvellous temple of South India and made a central part of temple worship every year at the Capricorn solstice on 21 December. I must further state that without the zodiacal background, these cosmic directions, south and north, would be meaningless, just as they have become for scientists and Nirayana astrologers.

Cosmic Midday ought to be the most important festival in the calendar for Hindus because it is India’s ruling sign. Instead, the pundits tell us that Capricorn and Cancer ‘are no longer there’. They have shifted by 23 days and therefore devotees are forced to celebrate these Capricorn entry, that ‘shadowless’ Cosmic Midday, 23 days after the fact, on 15 January ; while others tell us that this zodiac was brought by the Greeks and cannot be related to the Veda and should therefore be discarded. And thus marvels of concept such as the Tanjavur Temple go completely unnoticed. Ignorance rules the day.

This brings me to discuss Guru Purnima’s main significance, the one that truly inspires awe in the heart of the disciple or devotee. Since the celebration occurs – or should occur – in true Adi/Cancer/Cosmic Midnight we realise how wise those who understood the cosmic script were. In order to align our consciousness-being with the Cosmic Truth and not the Ignorance (as in the darkness of midnight), the Guru’s help is the only way for this mortal race. Without that Light we are simply lost in the dark cosmic sea, tossed hither and thither like a rudderless ship. That ‘sea’ can be either the Divine Mother’s womb and hence our protection and nurturer, or the Mother of Darkness and Division. Knowledge or superstition? 

The choice is ours.

The Guru who can distinguish the difference between Cosmic Truth and Cosmic Ignorance would be great indeed.
