The Supramental Yoga and the Evolutionary Process of Transformation

‘All religions have saved a number
of souls, but none yet has been able
to spiritualise mankind. For that
there is needed not cult and creed,
but a sustained and all-comprehending
effort at spiritual self-evolution.’

Sri Aurobindo
CE, Volume 16, page 394

Discussions with Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet

15 June 1986, Stone Ridge, New York

An Excerpt from Part One:
[If] you look at the Mother's work isolated, as such: what she was doing and what we suppose that she was supposed to have done, then you think... ‘Well, nothing happened’. Everyone presumed that she would transform her body and come out looking like a young girl, or Lord knows what. But of course these ideas had no bearing on what she was really doing. So, in that particular work there were so many different levels you had to simply find your way through this labyrinth, through layers and layers until you got to the true work that was going on, that she did complete.
I don't know if you've read any of my things on this. It's in The New Way basically...you know, it was very difficult for people in the [Sri Aurobindo] Ashram at that time, especially for those who had no understanding of what was to come. The experience was very difficult because it seemed that everything ended there, with no clear understanding of what it was she had actually done. And like Sri Aurobindo, she didn't really announce: ‘Well, I've finished and I'm going.’ Sri Aurobindo didn't do anything of the sort either. He just left in a very unusual fashion. But he had completed what he had to do.
And I must say...I have to say, now, in this work...the people who are drawn to it and finally get involved, are those who are not concerned only with an individual development. This is very important. You cannot take it out of the context of the collective development and the world situation. In many other yogas and paths you can do that. But this particular work is almost, I would say, meaningless...in order to really understand it you have to see it in the context of the total development. As it is an integral yoga that Sri Aurobindo brought, in the same way the process is integral and has to deal with all levels. This may be very different from what we might...from the idea we may have of a collective work. That's another story. But...people, for example, who are only interested in their own personal development, usually become rather confused at a certain point. They don't understand why certain things happen, what does it all mean? When you do though, it is very exciting.'

Comet ISON - A Cosmological and Numerological Spectacle

On 28 November 2013 a large 'Sun-grazing' comet discovered on the 2012 Fall Equinox, will make it's closest approach to the Sun. This date is both interesting in terms of its proximity to what Sri Aurobindo and the Mother named 'Immortality Day', and in terms of its number power. The day and month reduce to 3 number power (28 + 11 = 39 = 3 + 9 = 12 = 1 + 2 = 3) and the year reduces to 6 (2 + 0 + 1 + 3 = 6). The full number power of the date is 9  (3 + 6).

The comet may 'survive' the gravitational force of its swing around the Sun, it could outshine the Moon and be visible even in the daytime or it may disintegrate into an indistinct cloud of cosmic dust. The below Youtube video claims that only 9 comets in 333 years have shined with similar intensity. Apparently this comet has the same orbital path as the Great Comet of 1680, which graced the Earth 333 years ago. Adding to the potential visual impact of this comet, is its circumpolar nature, meaning it would be visible all night long in the Northern Hemisphere. Whether or this comet lives up to its potential as visual spectacle or not, it still seems to be something of a numerological spectacle. If it survives, its closest approach to Earth is said to be 26/27th of December 2013. 26 December is the 360th day of the Year from January 1st and is an 8 number power. 27 Dec 2013 reduces to the number power of 9 (27.12.2013 = 9 + 3 + 6 = 18 = 1 + 8 = 9).

The Importance of the 9 (and the 3 and the 6) in terms of cultivating a supramental vision and consciousness of the whole, are discussed elsewhere on this blog [see: The Mathematical Formula of the Supramental Descent] and especially in Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet's book, The Gnostic Circle, but here's an image which helps to understand the framework of this Unity Consciousness. The 3, 6, 0/9 Points form the central Trinity of the ONE Circle (3 + 3 + 3 = 9).

Well, we'll see how this unfolds. It will be truly interesting to see if this comet will survive its closest approach to the Sun in the 9th astrological sign Sagittarius, and continue on to and past the Earth in the 10th sign Capricorn, making the 2013 Winter Solstice and subsequent 'Return of the Light', particularly stunning.
‘[T]he possession of our complete divine consciousness delivered from all falsehood by the free descent of the truth, gives us the secure possession of the world of Swar and the enjoyment of mental and physical being lifted into the godhead above darkness, falsehood and death by the in-streaming of our divine elements. This victory is won in twelve periods of the upward journey, represented by the revolution of the twelve months of the sacrificial year, the periods corresponding to the successive dawns of a wider and wider truth, until the tenth [month] secures the victory.’ - Sri Aurobindo, The Secret of the Veda

Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet discusses the significance of Sagittarius, and of being in the 9th Manifestation in the evolutionary scheme in a 1986 talk, transcribed in The Vishaal Newsletter, December 1986 (Vol.1, No. 5).:
'Yes, it is the Aquarian Age, but we are in this larger arc of the 9th Manifestation. And that answers a lot of questions. Otherwise, just by looking at it in terms of Aquarius, you cannot understand what is happening. You cannot understand this total breakdown. If you understand it in terms of the birth process: 9 Months, 9 ages, 9 manifestations, and either you live or you die - but there is a new creation that comes out. It is very simple and very clear. Then you begin to understand why. ... Where the only solution is a new birth. The only solution is a new creation. There is no other, because we cannot find a solution based on any of the old pillars that we've clung to for so long.' [bold emphasis added]

Here's the Youtube video mentioned above (and more info on the comet follows):

'There’s a legitimate possibility this might indeed be the real deal: for one thing, ISON (named for the International Scientific Optical Network, of which discoverers Artyom Novichonok and Vitali Nevski members) was first seen when it was nearly 600 million miles (965 million km) from the Sun, well beyond the orbit of Jupiter. That’s unusually distant for a comet to be spotted: these interplanetary chunks of debris usually live in the frigid realms out beyond Neptune and are more or less invisible until solar heat begins boiling ice and dust from their surfaces, forming a light-reflecting halo (known technically as its coma), that makes them seem bigger than they really are. The fact that ISON can already be seen means it may be reasonably large — perhaps a couple of miles across — which suggests that when it dips to less than a million miles (1.6 million km) above the Sun’s fires next November 28, it may be robust enough to avoid the breakup that often happens to smaller comets. And if it does survive, ISON could go on to light up the night sky in the Northern Hemisphere for much of December, 2013 and on into January. Comet experts are also making much of the fact that ISON’s path is very similar to that of Kirch’s Comet, a.k.a. Newton’s Comet, a.k.a. the Great Comet of 1680, which was bright enough to be seen in daylight and had a magnificently long tail (it was also the first comet ever discovered with a telescope). It’s not the same object, but it’s quite possible that both are chunks of a much larger body that broke apart long ago, maybe during its own passage through the inner solar system. The fact that such larger bodies exist isn’t in doubt: Pluto, for example, is essentially a gigantic chunk of dirty ice. (PHOTOS:Spinning In the Heavens — Spiral Galaxies) If ISON is truly destined to become one of the greatest comets in history, we won’t have to wait until November to find out. By August, it will still be more than 200 million miles (320 million km) from the Sun, but that’s close enough for it to start forming its halo. How bright it is then should be a good indication of how much brighter it could get. Even then, comet-lovers would be wise to stay calm. “Comets are like cats,” the great amateur astronomer and comet hunter David Levy, who has found 22 comets himself, has said. “They have tails, and they do precisely what they want.”' -

Shiva, Krishna and Sri Aurobindo in 1926

'[The Mother] had a small book by her table. She opened the book at random and said, “Here, read this.” The sentence was Sri Aurobindo telling someone in a letter, “Shiva and I are one.”' [bold added]- 'Interview with Sunanda Poddar'

In her 1961 Agenda, the Mother remembered 1926 as the year Shiva refused to incarnate until the Supramental Yoga was complete. Krishna however 'consented' to be FIXED in Sri Aurobindo [bold added]:

The Mother’s Agenda
2 August 1961
There's a ledge above the pillars there, where all the gods used to sit – Shiva, Krishna, Lakshmi, the Trimurti, all of them – the little ones, the big ones, they all used to come regularly, every day, to attend these meditations. It was a lovely sight. But they didn't have this kind of adoration for the Supreme. They had no use for that concept – each one, in his own mode of being, was fully aware of his own eternal divinity; and each one knew as well that he could represent all the others (such was the basis of popular worship, and they knew it). They felt they were a kind of community, but they had none of those qualities that the psychic life gives: no deep love, no deep sympathy, no sense of union. They had only the sense of their OWN divinity. They had certain very particular movements, but not this adoration for the Supreme nor the feeling of being instruments: they felt they were representing the Supreme, and so each one was perfectly satisfied with his particular representation.
Except for Krishna.... In 1926, I had begun a sort of overmental creation, that is, I had brought the Overmind down into matter, here on earth (miracles and all kinds of things were beginning to happen). I asked all these gods to incarnate, to identify themselves with a body (some of them absolutely refused). Well, with my very own eyes I saw Krishna, who had always been in rapport with Sri Aurobindo, consent to come down into his body. It was on November 24th, and it was the beginning of “Mother.”
Yes, in fact I wanted to ask you what this realization of 1926 was.
It was this: Krishna consented to descend into Sri Aurobindo's body – to be FIXED there; there is a great difference, you understand, between incarnating, being fixed in a body, and simply acting as an influence that comes and goes and moves about. The gods are always moving about, and it's plain that we ourselves, in our inner beings, come and go and act in a hundred or a thousand places at once. There is a difference between just coming occasionally and accepting to be permanently tied to a body – between a permanent influence and a permanent presence.
These things have to be experienced.
But in what sense did this realization mark a turning point in Sri Aurobindo's sadhana?
No, the phenomenon was important FOR THE CREATION; he himself was rather indifferent to it. But I did tell him about it.
It was at that time that he decided to stop dealing with people and retire to his room. So he called everyone together for one last meeting. Before then, he used to go out on the verandah every day to meet and talk with all who came to see him (this is the origin of the famous “Talks with Sri Aurobindo”... – Mother is about to say something severe, then reconsiders – anyway...) I was living in the inner rooms and seeing no one; he was going out onto the verandah, seeing everyone, receiving people, speaking, discussing – I saw him only when he came back inside.
After a while, I too began having meditations with people. I had begun a sort of “overmental creation,” to make each god descend into a being – there was an extraordinary upward curve! Well, I was in contact with these beings and I told Krishna (because I was always seeing him around Sri Aurobindo), “This is all very fine, but what I want now is a creation on earth – you must incarnate.” He said “Yes.” Then I saw him – I saw him with my own eyes (inner eyes, of course), join himself to Sri Aurobindo.
Then I went into Sri Aurobindo's room and told him, “Here's what I have seen.” “Yes, I know!” he replied (Mother laughs) “That's fine; I have decided to retire to my room, and you will take charge of the people. You take charge.” (There were about thirty people at the time.) Then he called everyone together for one last meeting. He sat down, had me sit next to him, and said, “I called you here to tell you that, as of today, I am withdrawing for purposes of sadhana, and Mother will now take charge of everyone; you should address yourselves to her; she will represent me and she will do all the work.” (He hadn't mentioned this to me! – Mother bursts into laughter)
These people had always been very intimate with Sri Aurobindo, so they asked: “Why, why, Why?” He replied, “It will be explained to you.” I had no intention of explaining anything, and I left the room with him, but Datta began speaking. (She was an Englishwoman who had left Europe with me; she stayed here until her death – a person who received “inspirations.”) She said she felt Sri Aurobindo speaking through her and she explained everything: that Krishna had incarnated and that Sri Aurobindo was now going to do an intensive sadhana for the descent of the Supermind; that it meant Krishna's adherence to the Supramental Descent upon earth and that, as Sri Aurobindo would now be too occupied to deal with people, he had put me in charge and I would be doing all the work.

This was in 1926.
It was only... (how can I put it?) a participation from Krishna. It made no difference for Sri Aurobindo personally: it was a formation from the past that accepted to participate in the present creation, nothing more. It was a descent of the Supreme, from... some time back, now consenting to participate in the new manifestation.
Shiva, on the other hand, refused. “No,” he said, “I will come only when you have finished your work. I will not come into the world as it is now, but I am ready to help.” He was standing in my room that day, so tall (laughing) that his head touched the ceiling! He was bathed in his own special light, a play of red and gold... magnificent! Just as he is when he manifests his supreme consciousness – a formidable being! So I stood up and... (I too must have become quite tall, because my head was resting on his shoulder, just slightly below his head) then he told me, “No, I'm not tying myself to a body, but I will give you ANYTHING you want.” The only thing I said (it was all done wordlessly, of course) was: “I want to be rid of the physical ego.”
Well, mon petit (laughing), it happened! It was extraordinary!... After a while, I went to find Sri Aurobindo and said, “See what has happened! I have a funny sensation (Mother laughs) of the cells no longer being clustered together! They're going to scatter!” He looked at me, smiled and said, Not yet. And the effect vanished.
But Shiva had indeed given me what I wanted!
Not yet, Sri Aurobindo said.
No, the time wasn't ripe. It was too early, much too early.
(silence)
I had it two years ago. But now there is something else – things are different now.

It struck me as odd when I first read this, and as I read it now, that the Trimurti - the Divine Trinity - was not functioning or manifesting as fully UNIFIED community or a unified consciousness-force. But now I am thinking that is perhaps one thing that is being underscored via the washing away of the Shiva statue: that in Truth, no GOD can stand ALONE ... as an entity isolated from the Whole, from the whole movement of evolution. In Truth, Brahman, Vishnu and Shiva (the forces of Creation, Preservation and Destruction) are One.

Krishna is well-known throughout the world as the 8th Avatar of Vishnu the Preserver. In her writing, Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet discusses in depth Sri Aurobindo's role as the 9th Avatar of Vishnu and lays out the case that this 9th Avatar would necessarily incarnate and influence the evolving Earthly CREATION in our New Age corresponding to the Preservation or FIXED sign of Aquarius. To be established in this Age is the Unity-Consciousness, where All is known as One Being and One Becoming, including of course the Hindu Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. See 'Ganga, Shiva and the Earth' for information on the symbolism of the June Ganges floods. The sadhu in the video below reports that the Ganges hadn't reached this height (the shoulders of Shiva), since 1925. Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet writes that 1926 marked beginning of the Age of Aquarius. The Mother tells the story that in 1926 Krishna descended into Sri Aurobindo yet Shiva refused until the Supramental work was complete.

Ganga, Shiva and the Earth

How Ganga comes to Earth

'Ganga is said to have descended from heaven and fallen onto Shiva's head, whence from his matted locks the Great God released her in a gentle flow upon the Earth. It is said that the Earth was spared the full impact of her power by this graceful act of Shiva, and that, had it not been so, the planet could not have tolerated the descent of Ganga in her full form.' - Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet, The River of January

'Ganga is the mother of rivers. She is the great Aorta that perfectly harmonizes in her being the planetary dimensions of time and space. Therefore she sets the rhythm of the pulsations that come into being from the contractions of the heart that Gangadevi is. Because of the rhythm of her contracting power, being that she is mystically situated in the land that is the soul of the Earth, she gives rise to other rivers.' - Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet, 'The Ganges and the 'River of January'', The New Way- a study in the rise and establishment of a gnostic society, Volume 2, Chapter 9. [A larger excerpt of this chapter can be found at www.aeongroup.com.]

The importance of the Ganga river as a living symbol is also discussed in Thea's recent 'Message to India', a four-part series.

Part I   On the Nature of Centreship
Part II  The Time has Come
Part III The Choice of Cosmic Truth or Superstition
Part IV India, Egypt and the Enigmatic Sphinx

Excerpt from Part I: 'The goal ... is a Unitary Creation, spherically poised around a centre, no longer linear. This will be completely set in place when India agrees to accept her centre-ship, when, in a reversal of the poet’s words, the Centre WILL hold. She will then abandon the mesmerising aspiration to become a superpower, for that simply indicates a clinging to the old binary formulation with its now outdated nomenclature that does not express the true reality of the new world order she is destined to facilitate. It indicates her reticence to move ahead on the crest of the Aquarian Wave and to be the channel for the ‘waters’ the Water Carrier dispenses upon Earth from his cosmic kumbha or jug. Millions of Hindus celebrate this astrological event at Allahabad precisely during the month of the Aquarian Kumbha. But the point is missed when the oneness is overlooked between the ‘water’ he carries in his kumbha and those the heavenly Ganga releases periodically upon Earth – provided the correct anchoring is done in calendrical/zodiacal time to permit reception of the River-Goddess’ boundless grace, just as the myth describes. The ‘jug’ is filled with her beneficent, re-vitalising energies; therefore her sign, Capricorn, precedes Aquarius in the wheel and the celebration should rightfully begin in her period – more specifically, when her sacred Source is reached in our annual zodiacal time-journey. This is January 3rd in calendar time each year, or when the Sun is seen to occupy the 12th degree of the sign. As centre, India can bridge the heavens to engage in this replenishing directly from the Source.'
