Miscalculations of Post-Vedic Astrologers & Resetting the Balance & Measures of the World

The following 4-part series by Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet is a recent response to Shri S. K. Kattacharjya of the World Association of Vedic Studies Yahoo Forum (WAVES-Vedic Forum). The issue at hand is the proper measurement of the Vedic Year or Zodiac. Ms. Norelli-Bachelet gives convincing evidence as to why the Tropical Zodiac is the true measure of the Vedic Year, not the Sidereal Zodiac as is followed by 'Post-Vedic' Astrologers who call themselves Vedic. One need not read Shri Kattacharjya's original post to appreciate the message bellow; but it can be read (along with other comments on this issue) on WAVES by joining the forum. His belief is that the Makar Sankranti, or entrance into the cardinal astrological sign of Capricorn is rightfully celebrated on 17 January in accordance with the Sidereal Zodiac, not on the December Solstice.


Friends, In my comments to Shri S. K. Battacharjya, much was left unsaid. His sober reply merits a more thorough answer. The issue is far too important and has been neglected for far too long.


Before all else, one point needs to be made, since without it no real sense can be made of the Vedic way. A true Vedic Astrologer – not the Post-Vedic kind that calls itself ‘Vedic’ – and all the astrology of the ancient world into the present, is geocentric. This undeniable fact has been allowing scientists to debunk astrology by claiming that the entire premise is wrong and proof of the under-developed concept the ancients had of the cosmos, and particularly of our solar system. They assumed that this geocentricity was due to ignorance of the fact that the Sun is central in our system and all the planets, including the Earth, travel around the luminary. Actually this argument reveals more ignorance on the part of science rather than astrology; but what is confounding is that there was not even one astrologer around to counter these ignorant attacks. A HOROSCOPE IS PERFORCE GEOCENTRIC, be this in a natal, a horary or a mundane chart, because the requirement is to place the individual or the event CENTRAL, or the object for which a horoscope is cast: that becomes the point of convergence and the resultant map of the heavens is then read.

The question of the Sun’s centrality was never the issue. To compound matters we have the proof that no one among the community of astrologers was able to counter this simple falsehood; the result is that all have been intimidated by Science to the point that a Post-Vedic system has been devised in the effort to fall in line with ‘scientific thinking’. This is the true basis of the Post-Vedic astrology, which seeks to pass itself off as ‘Vedic’. Today when the campaign gains force to displace that latter-day system in favour of the original Vedic method, we hear aggressive voices from the Post-Vedics claiming that their astrology is actually ‘scientific’. But science, as we know it today, plays absolutely no role in this matter. We cannot expect scientists to be yogis or philosophers; but we do expect, and demand, that astrologers – especially those who call themselves ‘Vedic’ – follow a specific sadhana to grasp the deepest implications of the Art.

SKB lucidly provides an example of the loss of Earth-centredness in Post-Vedic astrology (though to call what they do ‘astrology’ is equally misleading). When he describes the so-called ‘fixed’ stars as the givers of light, we have a further confirmation that the true Vedic Astrology has been lost because it is only in the ecliptic Tropical Zodiac that we find the path to the home of the Immortals, the goal of the Vedic ‘journey’ which the Rig Veda itself makes clear.

Since the constellations are always shifting according to the (mis)calculations of the Post-Vedics, Capricorn/Makar is no longer conjoined to the shortest day of the year – i.e., the December Solstice. Again, by the contrived separation of the inseparable, it is discovered that Post-Vedics know nothing about the Art, much less about the Vedic Journey. Knowledge, as the word implies, must be the foundation of astrology, of zodiacal wisdom. The path of Knowledge can never be understood via, for example, Nakshatras projected onto the sidereal circle. The harmony must be Earth-centred. And it must therefore find its balance on the Cardinal Poles of the Equinoxes and the Solstices. The fourth and highest is the victory rasi of the Veda, the tenth-month Capricorn.

The method to bury the Veda was to separate Solstice from zodiacal Capricorn/Makar, as SKB has sought to do, leaving merely a ‘seasonal’ function to those famous all-important Cardinal Poles. In view of the loss, the Knowledge went underground to survive. Now, to resuscitate that buried treasure we must wade through the accumulated mire Post-Vedics have engulfed the Art in, recalling the task of Matsyavatar’s retrieval yuge-yuge.


SKB has brought up the fact that Capricorn was not called Makar in the Mahabharat, and for this we thank him; rather it was the significantly meaningful BRAHMA instead. This is not different from either Capricorn or Makar, as I can easily demonstrate.

The Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Siva is repeated four times through the ecliptic ‘one circle’ of the Veda. Here we have another proof that the Epic, as in so many other places, was NOT referring to the sidereal circle but the Tropical Zodiac because the triune Godheads are also balanced on the Cardinal Poles in this manner, via the ancient and current categorisation of the signs: Cardinal = BRAHMA, Fixed = VISHNU, Mutable = SIVA; or Creation, Preservation, Destruction. Of course this is another aspect of the Art – very important if one seeks Knowledge – that has been buried for centuries. No astrologer today, east or west, refers to Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable, as the triune Godheads. I resuscitated this knowledge decades ago in my very first books on astrology, even before coming to India where this Knowledge, I soon realised, had been completely buried in mire. Now, SKB has provided the proof by citing the Mahabharat that my seeing is correct, if proof is needed.

As the fourth and highest Cardinal Pole, the sign SKB indicates as Brahma, we have confirmation not only of the zodiacal wisdom but, and this is the most important aspect, that it was and remains the Earth-centred tropical zodiac which holds that wisdom because the Cardinal Poles provide stability for that ‘one circle’ whose ‘360 spokes shake not in the least’. Stability is not found in the constellations with their constantly shifting Ayanamsha of the Post-Vedics. There is no Equinox/Solstice stability in the sidereal circle, which is crucial to the Veda.


I will proceed to the most important point of all: there is no path of higher knowledge leading to the goal of Immortality in the Nakshatras. The names given to them are proof enough. Whereas, the names, hieroglyphs, rhythms and measures of the Tropical Zodiac rasis provide true seekers of Vedic Wisdom with the most colossal store of wisdom of all times.

I challenge all Post-Vedics to prove the contrary. On my part, I will present the Vedic content of the tropical zodiac; let any one or all of them put forth whatever wisdom of the same standard that they have come upon in the study of this ancient and contemporary Art.

To end with one important aspect of the Vedic wisdom, I will refer to the apex of the Rishi’s quest once again, Capricorn/Makar/Brahma – providing proof based on higher knowledge of the Vedic order to support the statement that Capricorn cannot be separated from the Solstice as is currently being done, a method SKB upholds. Again, I must ask, on what basis?

Here is the reason why not only was it held as the rasi/month of Victory and the summit of the Journey, but also exactly why IT CANNOT BE SEPARATED FROM THE TENTH MONTH SOLSTICE. Again, we turn to the Earth for the answer, and this will reveal not only the Earth-centred focus of the true Vedic Astrology but also the practical application of the Art in that the physical reality of our planet’s own journey around the Sun, touching quarterly as it does these Cardinal Poles of Equinoxes and Solstices, very accurately describes exactly what that culmination meant and why it had to be in consonance with the actual structure of our very own solar system and its harmonies. What I will describe will also help us realise why Bhisma chose to leave this plane on no other date but the December Solstice, the shortest day of the year. For the fact is only at that precise time is a ‘portal’ opened to the land of the Immortals. The physical reality is our best indication of exactly what the Rishis experienced when they attained Immortality, remaining forever after to preside over the fortunes of Bharat from that eternal plane.

The light of the Sun is compressed at that precise moment of the solstice; the shortest day reveals this compression to a point. This is what the Rishis and Bhisma achieved after much diligent and difficult tapasya. Indeed, after they had successfully completed the Journey as explained in detail in the Vedic Myth and the Hymns. Compression of the consciousness-being to a point was and remains the key. And only those who have experienced this compaction can understand (hence, the Rishi asks ‘Who can comprehend this?). Bhisma then, in full consciousness, crossed the threshold through that Point to the land of the Immortals and remained ever connected to this Earth plane, just as the Rishis of old had done.

I repeat that this, my friends, is the reason why it is inadmissible that we continue to extol the scientific imposition of a separation between zodiacal signs and the Earth-centred harmonies of our system in favour of the constellations.


If this Earth-centred Vedic experience is understood, it will also explain how so fundamental a focus on the Tropical Zodiac for the Journey was lost. It was when astronomy became separated from the sacred and a ‘science’ unto itself that the idea arose of an ‘unscientific’ astrology which required rectification by Science. Since there were no Vedic Astrologers in Bharat at the time, only pundits (not Yogis, bear in mind), the latter were easily cowered down into accepting the lead of science in a field well beyond its scope. It was then that the focus shifted to the constellations in lieu of the Tropical Zodiac of the ecliptic, disregarding the irrefutable evidence in all the sacred texts that this was and remains an aberration. At the same time yogas, philosophies, cosmologies arose which followed the same logic: to seek ‘light’ in the Beyond – in the case of astrology it would be translated into eschewing the Earth-measure and adopting the sidereal system with its floating Ayanamsha.

Truth is ever present, nonetheless. Thus, the two branches developed into ‘proof’ for one another. But in both cases, ‘scientific’ cosmology and spirituality, no such solid proof can be provided for the accuracy science claimed it alone could furnish; just as no religion can furnish proof of ‘heaven’ in an afterlife, or else in a sequence of rebirths. These demand faith, belief – not science, not the factuality we find in the Vedic Way.

Briefly, this means that from that point onward Swar became ‘otherworldly’; Earth-orientation was lost and all Measure was from that beyond, as exemplified in the sidereal circle, not FROM THE EARTH outward. Measure of the sidereal brand was thus IMPOSED upon the Earth from beyond – contrary to the most fundamental precept of the Veda, that all stems from WITHIN. Ironically, and here lies the rub, no accuracy and factuality was forthcoming, as imagined, since that sidereal circle does not actually have an Ayanamsha, a Zero Point. Its existence is entirely ‘relative’, as our science is today; while the Vedic Way was as ‘absolute’ as the unchanging Cardinal Equinoxes and Solstices. For the latter we do not require any ‘rectification’. Their measures are what they are and have been across the Ages. All we need to do, as the ancient texts indicate, is to calculate Mahavishuva (March Equinox) and Capricorn Sankranti (December Solstice): no guess work, no reliance on this pundit or that. Above all, no speculation in matters that stand beyond relativism.

Additional Notes: The below image demonstrates the difference between the Tropical and Sidereal Zodiacs. In the Tropical Zodiac the Vernal Equinox is always the Zero Point or beginning of the Tropical Year, beginning with 0 degrees Aries. In the Sidereal Zodiac the 0 Point of Aries (the Zero Point of the Sidereal Year) slips backwards 1 degree approximately every 72 years. Currently the Sidereal Zodiac has shifted some 23 degrees/days backwards from the Tropical Year and hence entrance into the signs of the Sidereal Zodiac is calculated 23 days later than the Tropical Zodiac.

Fractals and the Divine Matrix

'A fractal is "a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be split into parts, each of which is (at least approximately) a reduced-size copy of the whole," a property called self-similarity.' [1]

In 2008 PBS aired a program on Fractals produced by NOVA - Hunting the Hidden Dimension, which will give the reader a broader appreciation for the significance of the rise of fractal geometry and mathematics:

The Phi Ratio or Golden Mean is known as a rudimentary fractal which is expressed in the Fibonacci sequence and in geometry. The following 'Fibonacci spiral' and Pentagram fractal show a progression of 'self-similar' and inter-nesting Phi proportions:

Modern man’s interest in and understanding of Fractal mathematics and geometry has come a long way since 1872 when Karl Weierstrass found a mathematical function that is ‘continuous everywhere but never differentiable’.

This continuity of form was dubbed a ‘fractal’ 103 years later by Benoit Mandelbrot in Les objets fractals (1975). Notable examples of such continuity or ‘self-similarity’ from the early 1900’s were the Koch snowflake and the Levy-C curve. In 1938 Paul Levy published his book Plane or Space Curves and Surfaces Consisting of Parts Similar to the Whole. In the 1960’s computers were used to produce self-similar or recursive designs and these designs became expressive of the revolutionary spirit and creativity of that decade. They were, and still are, symbolic of a dramatic shift in perceptions and fit well within the category of Psychedelic Art. Mandelbrot and the IBM computer helped to put fractal geometry on the map so to speak (i.e. in our field of vision/consciousness). It was in many ways the birth of a new geometry for a new age.

‘From the point of view of mathematics … nested shapes tended to be viewed as rare and pathological examples, of no general significance. But the crucial idea that was developed by Benoit Mandelbrot in the late 1960s and early 1970s was that in fact nested shapes can be identified in a great many natural systems and in several branches of mathematics.' Yet, long before Mandelbrot, computers and the coining of the word ‘fractal’, knowledge of ‘self-similarity’ existed. The Fibonacci sequence, which actually hails from ancient India, is one such example. Apparently Leonardo Fibonacci (1170-1250 C.E.) introduced both the Hindu-Arabic numeral system which is still in use today throughout the world and the Fibonnacci sequence to Europe in his 1202 C.E. publication Liber Abaci (Book of Calculations). Considering the Vedic civilization’s deep understanding of the self-similarity between macro and microcosm and its gnosis of mathematics and measurement, it is not too surprising to find that the Fibonacci sequence is one of the many enduring gifts ancient India has given the world. Knowledge the Golden Ratio is traced back to the Artha-Veda (thought to be written at least 5000 years old) and somewhat more recently to the work of Pingala (450 – 200 BCE), a Sanskrit grammarian who referred to the Fibonacci sequence as matrameru, translated as ‘mountain of cadence.’ Meru means mountain. And matra, mean not simply cadence (measure of movement or rhythmical flow) in poetic or spoken verse, but also a measure of any kind (time, space, number, distance), a particle, an atom, a degree of a circle, or a minute portion. It also means ‘the full measure of anything, the whole or totality’ and ‘mother’.

It is entirely possible that the multi-dimensional, multi-scale meaning of the word matra is expressive of the Vedic knowledge and conception of what we now call fractals or self-similarity, nested structures or recursive design in nature and cosmos. The infinite repetition of the whole (the Material Cosmos) in individual form and throughout time was certainly basic and fundamental Vedic gnosis. On this basis they measured, acknowledged and recorded the inherent harmonies of time and space, and attuned themselves to these inherent harmonies.

Hence in Vedic cosmology, the Earth’s Day is equivalent or ‘self-similar’ to the Earth’s Year which is equivalent to the Precession of the Equinoxes which is, in turn, equivalent to even larger cycles of time. The tradition of dividing the Precession of the Equinoxes into 12 ages, the Year into 12 months, the Day into 24 (2 x 12) hours is another testimony of the ‘fractal’ nature or ‘fractal’ geometry of Time. The same 360 degree structure and the same stages and flow of development apply equally to the micro-cycle of time as to the macro-cycle. Out of this holistic thought or consciousness, come many fascinating equivalences and correspondences such as the Precession of the Equinoxes being measured in terms of the Vedic Yuga which is equivalent to the radius of the Sun in miles (432,000), and the 86,400 seconds of the Earth’s day being ‘self-similar’ to the 864,000 mile diameter of the Sun.

What is interesting to me is that in the Vedic civilization the infinite replication of the macrocosm in microcosmic forms was understood as a whole, divinely orchestrated, harmonic perfection. The minute portion of the whole was understood as an individual expression of the whole and inseparable from the whole … in a sense, unbreakable. Yet the word modern man has adopted word for these minute portions or repetitions of the whole – ‘fractal’ – is derived from fractus, meaning broken, fractured, shattered, vanquished or defeated.

To name a repetition of the whole after a word that means broken, shattered and defeated seems to me to be quite an oxymoron … a reflection of a isolated consciousness that feels irrevocably broken off from the Universal Mother and hence shattered. It is sad really, to contemplate the loss of knowledge of and harmony with the Divine Matrix that we have endured over how ever many millennia – the fall from the Divine Matra (the Universal Mother or Matriarch and all her measured parts and expressions) that leaves us with such a shattered identity. But, according to Sri Aurobindo and the Rig Veda, even our apparent set backs are useful stages in the evolutionary journey towards recovering our true identity, recovering our self-similarity and harmony with the Earth, the Cosmos, and all of creation.

A new-found appreciation of self-similar or recursive forms or designs of the Divine Matrix emerged in the art, architecture and science of European Renaissance, in part due to the 1509 publication of Luca Pacioli's Divina Proportione whose subject was the Golden Mean or Golden Ratio. Leonardo da Vinci (1452 – 1519) abundantly used the Golden Mean in his creations. Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) is another man whose appreciation of the Golden Mean and self-similar or nested structures has lived on through his work to illuminate our modern understanding of our Earth and Cosmos. His idea that the structure of the solar system was a macrocosm of nesting platonic solids was apparently incorrect, but out of his appreciation for a soulful Earth and Cosmos and the repetitive geometries of nature came his discovery of the Kepler solids and three laws of planetary motion. In our modern world fractal geometry and mathematics (symmetrical and asymmetrical) are applied towards computer technology, communication, data storage and the transmission of data, graphic arts, animation, wireless technology (via smaller and smaller antennae), nano-tecnology, energy technology and diagnostic medicine. Fractals are also the building blocks of modern Physic’s Chaos Theory which strives to explain the unpredictable nature of whole systems.
‘Fractal geometry and chaos theory are providing us with a new perspective to view the world. For centuries we've used the line as a basic building block to understand the objects around us. Chaos science uses a different geometry called fractal geometry. Fractal geometry is a new language used to describe, model and analyze complex forms found in nature.’
I have recently read that the essence of Chaos Theory is really about finding the underlying order underneath the apparent chaos. It seems then that like the name ‘fractal’, “Chaos Theory’ is something of a misnomer. The human mind is faced with the task of fathoming the pervasive and integral order and multi-layered dynamism of the whole and of self-similar sub-systems of the whole. We labor (even if unconsciously) to find the perspective from which all dynamism and form are known, seen and experienced as a harmonious expression of, and re-creation of the One Universal Being. This was the perspective achieved by the Vedic seers and needs to be restored in our new age.

At some point our modern understanding of fractals and Chaos Theory must come full circle and reunite with the Vedic gnosis of macro and microcosm and gnosis of a divinely or supramentally orchestrated Order. For this to happen there must be some recognition that a point-less or soul-less system is not capable of order. There also must be some recognition that ‘fractal’ geometry applies to the structure of Time as well as to the structure of material creation (the Matrix). The ancient calendar systems of the Vedic and Mayan civilizations and their various epochs, ages and cycles of time, including the 12 month Vedic Year – which is one and the same as our modern Tropical Zodiac, will begin to make much more sense to us as our modern understanding of self-similar or nested micro and macrocosmic structures in both time and space begins to expand. The world-wide and world-unifying cultural renaissance or rebirth that will result from this expansion in understanding and consciousness is something that sages and prophets have been predicting for ages.

A clear harmony marked their truth’s outline,
Reset the balance and measures of the world.
Each shape showed its occult design, unveiled
God’s meaning in it for which it was made
And the vivid splendour of his artist thought.

Readers interested in the Geometry of Time should read The Gnostic Circle by Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet in which the 9 year cycle of time and larger cycles of 9 such as the 25,920 year Precession of the Equinoxes are seen as an expansion of the 12 month year. Vedic In the Real Sense - The Mother's Experience of Material Union With the Divine

The Mother related her experience of a physical/material union with the Divine to Sri Aurobindo in a letter dated 26 November 1915. It was translated by Sri Aurobindo from the original French and included in his book The Mother.
'The entire consciousness immersed in divine contemplation, the whole being enjoyed a supreme and vast felicity.

'Then was the physical body seized, first in its lower members and next the whole of it, by a sacred trembling which made all personal limits fall away little by little even in the most material sensation. The being grew in greatness progressively, methodically, breaking down every barrier, shattering every obstacle, that it might contain and manifest a force and a power which increased ceaselessly in immensity and intensity. It was as a progressive dilatation of the cells until there was a complete identification with the earth: the body of the awakened consciousness was the terrestrial globe moving harmoniously in ethereal space. And the consciousness knew that its global body was thus moving in the arms of the universal Being, and it gave itself, it abandoned itself to It in an ecstasy of peaceful bliss. Then it felt that its body was absorbed in the body of the universe and one with it; the consciousness became the consciousness of the universe, immobile in its totality, moving infinitely in its internal complexity. The consciousness of the universe sprang towards the Divine in an ardent aspiration, a perfect surrender, an it saw in the splendour of the immaculate Light the radiant Being standing on a many-headed serpent whose body coiled infinitely around the universe. The Being in an eternal gesture of triumph mastered and created at one and the same time the serpent and the universe that issued from him; erect on the serpent he dominated it with all his victorious might, and the same gesture that crushed the hydra enveloping the universe gave it eternal birth. Then the consciousness became this Being and perceived that its form was changing once more; it was absorbed into something which was no longer form and yet contained all forms, something which, immutable, sees, the Eye, the Witness. And what It sees, is. Then this last vestige of form disappeared and the consciousness itself was absorbed into the Unutterable, the Ineffable.

'The return towards the consciousness of the individual body took place very slowly in a constant and invariable splendour of Light and Power and Felicity and Adoration, by successive gradations, but directly, without passing again through the universal and terrestrial forms. And it was as if the modest corporeal form had become the direct and immediate vesture, without any intermediary, of the supreme and eternal Witness.'
Sri Aurobindo responded on 31 December 1915:
‘The experience you have described is Vedic in the real sense, though not one which would be easily recognized by the modern systems of Yoga which call themselves Yogic. It is the union of the “Earth” of the Veda and the Purana with the divine Principle, an earth which is said to be above our earth, that is to say, the physical being and consciousness of which the world and the body are only images. But the modern Yogas hardly recognise the possibility of a material union with the Divine.'

'The Mother' by Sri Aurobindo – Progress in the Earth-Consciousness

Question [Student]: Is there really an internal progress in the universe – “marche interne d’univers”, as the Mother says? Except in a few individuals there is hardly any progress in mankind. Internally and externally the universe seems to be moving in the same circle always without making any essential progress.

Answer [Sri Aurobindo]: “Univers” in French usually means not the whole universe but the “world” – the earth. There must be a progress in the earth-consciousness, otherwise there could have been no evolution. The evolution of mankind may go in circles or spirals, but there is all the time an opening of more and more complete possibilities till the possibility of the evolution of a higher race becomes valid.

Today I've been re-reading certain sections of The Mother, and found the above jewel/quote thanks to the following comment on another blog post:
'Regarding [Sri Aurobindo] I read his book on Integral Yoga (compilation of letters) but the one that most deeply changed my life is his book "The Mother", which really simplifies his yoga and it has really changed my life. For Want of a Common Soul & a Supramental Knowledge

'Peter Heehs' Betrayal and an Ashram in Upheaval - Two Sides of the Same Mistake' which discussed the nagging central flaw in both sides of the brouhaha, noting that each of the prominent sides of the argument 'have belittled the full scope of the yoga and blocked the true flow and essence of [Sri Aurobindo's and the Mother's] Work'. The following article by Robert E. Wilkinson deepens this line of thought and expands on the idea that Peter Heehs' biography of Sri Aurobindo has been a catalyst to expose the lack of true center in Auroville and in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram since the Mother's passing in 1973.

Stop Scapegoating Peter Heehs

Alok Pandey’s thoughtful article about the Heehs imbroglio brought up a number of important points but his burning questions about HOW and WHY this dispute occurred in the first place remain unanswered. To understand the HOW and WHY behind the Heehs controversy, one must be willing to stop the scapegoating and go deeper into the origins of the ignorance and confusion from which Heehs’ literary heresy came into being.

Since the Mother’s departure in 1973 both Auroville and the Ashram have suffered and continue to experience the eroding effect of incompetent leadership. Instead of forming around a common Soul and a Supramental knowledge, which was the Mother’s avowed intention, Auroville and the Ashram have formed around a Collective Ego. Instead of a true spiritual community guided by Realized Beings, the seat of Sri Aurobindo’s work was taken over by the Indian government and is now run by Philosophers and Politicians who, the Mother warned us, would be the very last to be transformed. This is the polluted soil from which Heehs' book emerged and the noxious influence that nursed his iconoclastic attitude.

The most important causal factor behind the Heehs’ controversy, completely absent from these discussions, and apparently quite unknown to Alok and others, is the existence of and the occult effect of a true collective Center or Soul. In the parlance of the Integral Yoga it is called the ‘Psychic Being’. It is the ordering and unifying principle of any collectivity and if it were truly present in the Auroville and Ashram community, the bitter controversies, legal disputes and polarization of devotees upon racial and other lines would have been a virtual impossibility. The community of devotees would know this if they had bothered to acquire a direct lived experience of the Yoga and the Vedic ‘Skambha’ instead of the lifeless mental orthodoxy that has been offered in its place. Indeed, one need only look at the ongoing disharmony and chaos in Auroville and the Ashram to know TO A CERTAINTY that there is NO CENTER. William Butler Yeats, himself a realized being, eloquently describes this occult phenomenon in the first lines of his poem ‘The Second Coming’.
‘…Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world.
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.’
You could not find a better description of how Alok Pandey and others have experienced Peter Heehs’ destructive influence but what they fail to realize is that Heehs is not the CAUSE of this ongoing controversy but merely one of the SYMPTOMS of the CENTERLESS condition that exists today in Auroville and the Ashram. To someone who SEES, the situation and its errors have an almost formulaic precision to it producing a mathematical result when something essential is left out of the mix. It may be compared to G.W.H. Hegel’s famous three part dialectical formula known as Hegel’s law. If you apply the principles of Thesis and Antithesis but reject the Third principle of Synthesis, the formula is fractured, true unity cannot be achieved and an integral understanding becomes impossible…

The same principles apply to the Supramental formula. Sri Aurobindo explained to us that the Divine is not only Transcendent but also Cosmic and finally Individual – Purusha, Prakriti and the Individual Soul. Its power and force must be brought down into the world in order to effect any real transformation in the earth-consciousness. As we know, Sri Aurobindo’s work dealt exclusively with the Transcendent Plane. The Mother’s work and her Vedic Temple is an incomparable translation of the Occult-Cosmic Plane. But it isn’t until you get to the Third Level and Thea’s work that you come upon the Synthesizing principle of the Psychic Being or Individual Soul. Naturally her field is represented in the Mother’s temple architecture as the GLOBE or CENTER of the entire structure that unites the Transcendent and Cosmic planes in an integral perfection. But as we know, the Philosophers and Politicians who rule Auroville and the Ashram have rejected the Third along with her knowledge of the Mother’s Inner Chamber. As a consequence, they have consigned themselves and innocent students like Alok to a partial, dis-integrated and order-less mental dogma which cannot be brought down and applied in the earth-field. Through this disgraceful and deliberate act of omission, the usurpers in Pondicherry have reduced Sri Aurobindo’s work to what he called ‘a pompous farce’.

In my opinion, Alok has unfairly placed the Heehs’ controversy at the feet of the Ashram trustees who he believes chose to ignore the signs of an impending disaster. He does so while crediting others like Amal Kiran, and R Y Deshpande for raising a timely alarm. But what he fails to understand is that they too are complicit, if not more so, in creating the long-standing foundations of this problem. I have discussed Amal Kiran’s shameful behavior in another article* so I will not repeat my comments here. But I would like to extend this discussion of a Soulless Centerless cosmos to R Y Deshpande and his Mirror of Tomorrow blog. Here again we find with mathematical precision, the cause of the errors and shortcomings in Deshpande’s commentaries on Sri Aurobindo’s Savitri. For what is Savitri but a story of IMMORTALITY and the SOUL? How on earth can anyone presume to put themselves forward as an authority on Savitri without a lived experience of the Soul and the Vedic scriptures upon which this epic is based? Absent this, Deshpande’s authoritative musings and imaginings of Sri Aurobindo’s poetic verses are simply misleading speculations which serve only to divert the students’ attention from the real and essential purpose of this epochal work. Moreover, because he presents only a dismembered or partial view of the line of Supramental descent from the Transcendent to Cosmic, leaving out entirely the Individual Soul, Deshpande consolidates the erroneous view that Sri Aurobindo and the Mother failed in their mission. It cannot be otherwise. As Thea explains:
‘It is a fact that every publication issued from Ashram and Auroville sources, Heehs’ included, passes on to the public – though the intention appears to be other – that both Sri Aurobindo and the Mother failed in their missions. Not one publication can factually prove otherwise; and since there is no one in your circles who can state the contrary and receive the accepted ‘imprimatur’, this is the result: both Sri Aurobindo and the Mother failed ‘to deliver’. Or if they did, we mortals are not qualified to prove what stands beyond human comprehension. And since this is your belief, you must accept full responsibility for spreading the idea that they seemed to have failed.

Nothing could be farther from the truth. Not only did they complete their missions, they did so beyond our wildest expectations. You can be sure that Supermind would not leave the fulfillment of its descent and establishment on Earth to the ‘belief’ of anyone: it is its own irrefutable proof.

This has been fully documented, the only existing book [The New Way] to not only prove the victorious completion of their missions but also it is the only irrefutable documentation of the fact that they are Vishnu’s Emanations – i.e., Evolutionary Avatars who come yuge, yuge, just as the Gita states, proven as only the Truth-Consciousness can do.’

This then is the HOW and WHY that eludes Alok Pandey and others who concentrate on the EFFECTS instead of the CAUSE. If they are ever to resolve the underlying problem, they must embrace the Third and the SOUL within which She is. Only then will their vision clear to reveal the true meaning of Sri Aurobindo’s birth and rebirth as the apotheosis so exquisitely described in his epic poem.

Vishnu, Sri Aurobindo & the Force of a Secret Unity

Several articles in this blog have discussed the idea that when looking at events and circumstances as being related within the 360 degree cyclical structure of Time and Space, one begins to see geometries, synchronicities, harmonies, themes, relationships and ‘golden threads’ that are not visible when looking at circumstances as linear.* When such patterns are seen within and throughout the whole, one can better appreciate what Sri Aurobindo called the Supramental Consciousness – a vast multi-dimensional or all-dimensional truth-consciousness and all-pervading force which far surpasses the human mind’s current organizational and creative capacities. By understanding the field of its action the Supramental consciousness-force is better understood and seen as the ‘force of a secret Unity’ which compels the material universe towards full expression of its Divine Self.

In August a series of events or circumstances unfolded in my life in a way that seemed to be an excellent demonstration of the multi-dimensional and higher-than-mental organizational skills of the True Self (a unified being/becoming). On August 7th I published an article titled ‘Sri Aurobindo’s Kin Asked to Leave India’. The subject matter was the corrupt circumstances underlying the deportation order hand-delivered to Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet (Thea) on July 15th. I wrote:
‘Surely some find it interesting that in the same month the government announced their plans to celebrate Sri Aurobindo’s arrival in the safe haven of Pondicherry, they sent police to the door of Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet, telling her she had four and a half days (two business days) to leave the country or she would be arrested. Ms. Norelli-Bachelet, a resident of India since 1971, is recognized by many in India and throughout the world as an essential continuation of Sri Aurobindo’s yoga, and especially as an extension of his will towards uplifting the Sanatana Dharma and the true Vedic idea that has been lost on Indians and the rest of the world alike for aeons.’
I noted the intriguing coincidence that on the same day the exit order was given, a chapter of her latest book was published in an Indian magazine (Bhavan’s Journal) which discusses Sri Aurobindo as an avatar of Vishnu. The book’s title is Secrets of the Earth – Questions and Answers on the Line of Ten Avatars of Vedic Tradition.

The very next day, on August 8th, Tusar N. Mohapatra (editor of Savitri Era Open Forum) wrote an article titled ‘Sri Aurobindo and the Mother already accomplished the metaphysical victory’:
‘The divine manifestation of The Mother & Sri Aurobindo is an unprecedented phenomenon which can't be explained by past mythological instances or received metaphysical formulations. Parameters of perennial philosophy or speculative prophecies like eternal recurrence fall flat here. All talk of the Messiah, the Tirthankar or the Avatar is idle intellectual approximations.’
Mr. Mohapatra is in agreement with others who feel that ‘Sri Aurobindo need not be in the series of Ten Avatars’ and that Thea’s yoga and yogic knowledge are not valid extensions of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother’s great yoga.

Late that afternoon I went for a walk. I had not left my house in a week due to health issues; and so instead of walking out my front door and up a hill as I usually do, I got into my car and drove to a beautiful flat-land neighborhood and community garden which would be an easy stroll. On one street I saw and perused a garage sale which the owners were in the process of closing down. The moment I began to conclude that not much of interest was left, I saw a large metallic sculpture of what seemed to be Vishnu seated on a huge multi-headed cobra with two goddesses. The owner confirmed that it was indeed Vishnu and I marveled at the coincidence of stumbling upon this representation of him after I had been writing about his Line of Avatars in conjunction with Sri Aurobindo, his yoga and Thea’s plight with the India government. I had been wondering all day (for weeks really) what the consequences would be for India if Sri Aurobindo’s yogic ‘kin’ – a fellow restorer of India’s dharma (a dharma which includes the true importance and true function of Vishnu’s evolutionary avatars) – was ousted from Indian soil. And so, without much ado or thought other than ‘Wow’, I paid a small price for the beautiful and seemingly miraculous Vishnu sculpture, had it loaded into my car and brought it home.

Later that evening, via the world-wide-web, I discovered that it was a bronze Sheshshayi Vishnu from Tamil Nadu (the seat of Sri Aurobindo’s, the Mother’s and Thea’s yoga), worth some $1300. I felt like I had won a cosmic door prize ... a boon of assurance ... assurance that Vishnu, or rather the all-pervading universal consciousness he represents, was no irrelevant myth. It felt like an assurance that I am tuned in to the right station, that everything is in order and that Sri Aurobindo’s position as the 9th Avatar of Vishnu, his rebirth as the 10th and the importance/necessity of Thea’s yoga and her presence in India will eventually be self-evident.

Finding Sheshshayi Vishnu, complete with the two goddesses Sridevi (the Divine Mother or Mistress of the Cosmos) and Bhudevi (Mother Earth, Daughter of the Cosmos), would have been assurance enough for me; but other details kept popping up, adding intrigue and perfection to the picture. First of all this Vishnu – the ‘Lord of the Cosmos’ and Lord of the 360 degree zodiac – found his way to a house whose street address is 360. At this 360 address live four people (including myself) as well as one cat and one dog. With the exception of the dog, the Sun Sign of every member of our household is a Preservation sign of the zodiac – i.e. one of the four signs of Vishnu the Preserver: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. The fact that our dog is not a fixed sign is no spoiler of the Vishnu pattern or ‘golden thread’ because her name is Zoe, which shares the root ‘zo’ (meaning ‘life’ or ‘to live’) with the word ‘zodiac’. Zoe means ‘life giver’ and ‘zodiac’ means ‘circle of life.’ It was truly amusing that this Vishnu would find his resting place at a ‘360’ address wherein each of the four preservation signs of the zodiac was thoroughly represented. It was especially amusing and intriguing considering my own profound interest in the real evolutionary consciousness-force that Vishnu represents.

Due to the very real impact of Sri Aurobindo’s incarnation and his Supramental Yoga, Vishnu's periodic manifestations in the astrological ages corresponding to ‘preservation’ (as in our current Age of Aquarius) do not occur to me as a useless and fanciful mythological story. It rather occurs to be a very real evolutionary occurrence that not many are in the position to appreciate. My appreciation of the reality of the evolutionary scheme of Vishnu's Dasavatars versus the myth has been cultivated via an ongoing and thoroughly compelling study of the Supramental Descent/Manifestation, the Supramental Cosmology and the Geometry of Time. Without that background, Vishnu and his iconography, his 10,000 names, his Dasavataras, his Eagle (Scorpio) and his three backwards ‘steps’ through the zodiac … to the Lion (Leo), the Bull (Taurus) and the Man (Aquarius) would make no real sense to me at all.

The next interesting detail of finding Vishnu at the garage sale was that the date, 8.8.2009, reduces to 9 (via Theosophical addition). Those who are familiar with the circular and cyclical essence of Vedic Mathematics, or with the Supramental Cosmology and the Geometry of Time as introduced and taught by Thea, understand that the circle of 9 and the number 9 represent the form and dynamics of the cosmos which moves/progresses in circle or cycles of 9. Events falling on a 9 powered day or a 9 powered year are ‘special’ in the sense that the 9 represents the full expansion and expression of the original seed, essence or indwelling consciousness of the sol/soul. It represents fullness – the maturation of a full cycle, gestation or evolutionary process from which something new can be born. Hence in Sanskrit nav means both ‘new’ and ‘nine’, and is also the root of ‘navel’ (the center of a circle or of a body). Sri Aurobindo’s incarnation as the 9th Avatar of Vishnu reflects this fullness – a full manifestation of Truth-Consciousness – from which a truly new stage of human evolution/consciousness is born. Not by coincidence, Sri Aurobindo was born in 1872, which reduces to 9 (1 + 8 + 7 + 2 = 18 = 1 + 8 = 9).

The Mother herself seemed quite aware that the number 9 was ‘special’ in terms of the new Supramental consciousness and creation that has been born in the midst of the old.

‘The whole is brought with lightening speed towards
the consciousness that will be this Consciousness
of the point and the whole at the same time ….

... The figure 9 has something to do with all of this ….

After I realized the 9 number power of the date, I wondered what the address of the garage sale was. Days later I drove back by and saw it was 135 Laurel Ave. 135 reduces to 9 (1 + 3 + 5 = 9). The 9 number power of the address was impressive. Equally impressive was the name of the street – ‘Laurel’, due to the fact my birth name and middle initial are ‘Laura L.’. So these synchronicities were delightful. I felt supremely held by the universe … not just held, but interacted with in a profound way, and grateful to witness some of the True Self’s mind boggling organizational skills.

Then a week or so later, on Sri Aurobindo’s birthday, I created and published an image of how Vishnu can be ‘seen’ in the Mother’s Symbol. This image was considered to be blasphemous by Mr. Mohapatra. [See 'Lori Deplored ...']

Anyone familiar with the zodiac can see that the four inner spokes of the Mother’s Symbol point to the very heart of the four ‘preservation’ signs of the zodiac: 15 degrees Taurus, 15 degrees Leo, 15 degrees Scorpio and 15 degrees Aquarius. As I was creating that image, I remembered that, in terms of the zodiac, 135 degrees of the 360 degree circle is actually 15 degrees Leo. Considering that Sri Aurobindo himself was a Leo and that 2007 marked the 135th anniversary of his birth, I was impressed by the multiple dimensions of the coincidences. The number 135 had presented itself in the spokes of the Mother’s Symbol, it presented itself in time as 15 degrees Leo (the 7th/8th of August) and in space as 135 Laurel Avenue, it presented itself in Sri Aurobindo’s current ennead (i.e. 9 year cycle: 135-144) and it presented itself to me in the substantial form of a bronze sculpture of Vishnu accompanied by not only one but two goddesses.

For me the ‘writing’ was on the proverbial wall; but the wall was not so much a wall as it was a unified field of Time and Space. Vishnu and his two companions represent the Divine Trinity: the Transcendent Divine, the Cosmic Divine and the Individual Divine as written of by Sri Aurobindo in The Life Divine and elsewhere. The Earth Goddess represents the Individual Divine because She (the Earth) is a child of the Cosmos – an individual form and individual soul evolving towards self-realization and self-fulfillment.

Up until 8.8.2008 I had assumed the Hindu god Vishnu only had one companion, a singular Lakshmi. I never realized or thought to consider that He would naturally by accompanied by both the Cosmic Mother and the Earth Mother. This incorrect assumption reminded me that up until January of the year 2000 I had assumed that Sri Aurobindo and the Mother were strictly a Duo. I never thought to inquire into whether or not there was a ‘Third’. As is usually the case, when we assume that something does not exist, we are not likely to find it in our experience. As soon as I was opened to the idea/possibility that an Individual component of the Supramental Descent was necessary, circumstances quickly organized themselves to show me that this ‘component’ already existed.

It seems clear to me that a certain amount of Grace is involved whenever we manage to overcome our previous limitations and acquire a wider vision and experience of Reality; but it is also true that we can be taught and prepared to encounter wider and wider ranges of truth that have not been previously accessible to the mind. Even if at first we did not expect ourselves, the World and the Cosmos to be holistically and harmoniously expressive of and organized by a Divine Consciousness, we certainly can be taught and prepared to overcome our previously low assumptions and low expectations of the Consciousness, Cosmos and World that brought us into existence.

If I had found Sheshshayi Vishnu at a garage sale without having been taught to understand and see circumstances in terms of the 360 degree field or ‘superstructure’ of Time and Space, and if I had not bothered try to understand the true significance of Vishnu, his companion goddesses, and his various symbols, then very little of the gift’s true value and significance would have dawned on me. A week ago I noticed that a spider had cast a small but full web on Sheshshayi Vishnu. My first thought was that the web was out of place, a nuisance, and needed to be taken down. But then I saw the web had been constructed directly over Vishnu’s disc, as if the spider, the lord of the web, had put his or her own cosmic design on top of Vishnu’s cosmic design on purpose. Even in this small detail, the ‘logic of the Infinite’ was present. Its beauty and precision could easily have had no witness.

The full value, significance, beauty and purpose of the present and the past that the Divine Cosmos and Divine Earth has laid at our doorstep is frequently missed for all sorts of reasons. From what I have learned, a limited understanding of how the Divine Being and the Individual Soul navigates and expresses/unfolds itself in the 360 degree field of Time and Space is a fundamental culprit. Spiders never seem to loose their natural ability to express and attune themselves and their developmental/creative process to the 360 degree field in which they exist, nor do trees or flowers, or shells or planets or multitudes of forms that exist in the Cosmos and on the Earth. Yet somehow the human mind is quite capable of operating without much attunement to or appreciation of the field in which and by which we exist. This limited attunement to and appreciation of the field of our existence is not meant to be a permanent affair.
‘By the force of the secret Unity, the soul in becoming is urged by its own unseen reality and by the occult pressure of evolutionary Nature to come out of this state of Ignorance and recover eventually the knowledge of the one Divine Being and its oneness with it and at the same time to recover its spiritual unity with all individual beings and the whole universe. It has to become aware not only of itself in the universe but of the universe in itself and of the Being of cosmos as its greater self; the individual has to universalize himself and in the same movement to become aware of his supracosmic transcendence. This triple aspect of the reality must be included in the total truth of the soul and of the cosmic manifestation, and this necessity must determine the ultimate trend of the process of evolutionary Nature.’ – Sri Aurobindo, The Life Divine

Why Is a Port in Central America on an Ancient Indian Map?

"The Hindus of antiquity had an ancient astro-geographical map with four lotus petals pointing in the cardinal directions, called Mt. Meru (the world mountain). The point of the left petal fell on a seaport called Ketumala or Chetumala. Both pronunciations were used. The lower center petal was Jambudvipa (subcontinent India ). One day, I decided to examine a map of Meso-America in order to find out whether a Chetumala or Ketumala ever existed there. Why Is Sanskrit Found in the Tribal Names & Languages of North & South American 'Indians'?

The video below (in 5 parts) is Grahm Hancocks's documentary 'Hindu India - The Birth of Civilization: Dwarka 10,000 Year Old Metropolis is Found'. [THE VIDEO NO LONGER AVAILABLE DUE TO 'THIRD PARTY NOTIFICATIONS OF COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT' ...] Lately I've been wondering what kind of impact this 2001 discovery of a 10,000 year old 'metropolis' submerged off the coast of northwestern India has made on modern man. How thoroughly has this site been studied? How have the historians and history books adjusted to the evidence that Indian civilization was advanced enough to build such a city 10,000 years ago? I am currently reading a book titled 'India Once Ruled the Americas' by Gene D. Matlock that gives quite a bit of linguistic evidence that various waves of Indians colonized the Americas for thousands of years, forming or greatly influencing the Native American population. The obvious irony is that American Indian's were supposedly mistaken and henceforth dubbed 'Indians' by Christopher Columbus in the late 1400s. But considering the Sanskrit roots of the vocabulary and even the tribal names of many North and South American Indians, it seems that Native Americans really are, at least to some significant degree either of Indian descent or greatly influenced by India.

I came to be curious about this theme a few years ago when I noticed that the Monongahela River of West Virginia (where I was born), which was apparently the territory of the Monongahela tribe of Native Americans, sounded an awful lot like two Sanskrit words, Menaka - the wife of Himvat (a personification of the Himalayas) and hila - which means 'of a mountain'. Menakahila - Monongahela??? Menaka and Himvat are known in Indian lore to be the parents of the goddess Ganga/Parvati. I found out that the Monogahelia 'Indians' are thought to have migrated to the Appalachian territory from Asia some 12,000 to 15,000 years ago; and I then began to wonder if the 'wife of Himvat' showed up anywhere else in the ancient Appalachian mountains. As it turns out, there is actually a Meneka Peak in Seven Fountains, Virginia. Strangely enough the daughter of Menaka is Ganga (the personification of the Ganges River) who is said to have been poured through Shiva's hair to become the SEVEN sacred rivers of India. What an interesting coincidence between Meneka Peak and its Seven Fountains (named after seven springs) and Menaka's daughter, the Ganges, becoming seven rivers as it descended through the massive Himalayan mountains.

Now, upon reading Gene Matlock's book and being ever more familiar with the antiquity and wide scope or extension of the Vedic culture throughout the world, I am curious as to when such matters will be more widely examined. Is it just a coincidence that the Monongahela River happens to flow vertically down through the longitude 79 W and the source of the Ganges is 79 E longitude? If Vedic and post Vedic Indians really did colonize North and South America over many aeons, how did they personify or mythologize the ancient Appalachian mountains? Did they recognize a relationship between the Appalachians and the Himalayas?

Perhaps Grahm Hancock's documentary will encourage more exploration into the true history of Vedic India and its influence on the world. It is well worth 50 minutes of one's time.

Sri Aurobindo - the Lotus and the Avatar

On 27 June 2008 Barindrinath Chaki wrote an article titled ‘Sri Aurobindo and Avatar-hood’. It was republished on Savitri Era Open Forum by Tusar N. Mohapatra with the title ‘Sri Aurobindo need not be in the series of Ten Avatars’. The gist of the article is as follows:
‘A few persons have said that Sri Aurobindo was the ninth Avatar of Vishnu. And it is also further claimed by them that He has again been reborn in the year 1963 and is the Tenth Avatar of Vishnu. These claims are not true…. Sri Aurobindo and The Mother have never and nowhere stated that He was an Avatar of Vishnu. As The Mother has stated, Sri Aurobindo is an emanation of the Supreme. Vishnu is an aspect of the Supreme, according to the Indian mythology.… Sri Aurobindo need not be in the series of the Ten Avatars.’ – Barindrinath Chaki
Mr. Chaki posts a handful of quotes of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother to ‘prove’ his assertion (stated as fact) that Sri Aurobindo could not have been the 9th Avatar of Vishnu, nor could he be reborn as Kalki, the 10th Avatar of Vishnu. This absolute assertion and the evidence used to support it is pale and unconvincing in light of Sri Aurobindo’s unparalleled role as the seed or catalyst for a global evolutionary shift towards the full Supramental Manifestation. It is also pale and unconvincing in light of the several volumes written by Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet on the matter. Chapter 9 of her latest book Secrets of the Earth – Questions and Answers on the Line of Ten Avatars of the Vedic Tradition, actually addresses Mr. Chaki’s emphatic rejection of Sri Aurobindo’s avatarhood as well as Peter Heehs’ statement that no one alive today could prove the matter conclusively. The entire book is relevant towards developing an understanding of Sri Aurobindo’s avatarhood and rebirth but it is the 9th and final chapter which addresses the vested interests of those who refuse to consider that the Vedic Line of Avatars is an evolutionary reality – an eternal dharma that has been brought out of the realm of myth and restored in our own age through the life and yoga of Sri Aurobindo. On this matter Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet has recently written:
‘Why is it that certain people, while pretending to be devotees of the Mother and Sri Aurobindo should protest so loudly that Sri Aurobindo is NOT an avatar – without even having studied the proof? I have given extensive proof. I have explained in detail Vishnu's method of avataric descent in multiple texts. I have explained in detail the mechanics of the supramental evolution and its irrefutable cosmic formulas, given out by Sri Aurobindo himself. What is to be gained by 'devotees' who reject Sri Aurobindo as an avatar of Vishnu? This question demands to be answered. All true lovers of Sri Aurobindo should join and in one voice ask these deniers WHY. Because it is not just an idle doubt expressed on their part. It is an active, relentless campaign, no less strident or vocal for lack of knowledge of the Dasavataras. At least we can see exactly who these deniers really are. Their arguments remain suspiciously hollow.’ [emphasis added]
It is a really good question. When offered such thorough and ample proof, WHY are certain devotees or practitioners of Sri Aurobindo’s yoga so absolutely and obstinately adverse to him being included in Vishnu’s Line of Ten Avatars? What is the real basis of the aversion? From what I have seen the arguments presented in no way portray a curiosity or quest for the truth of the matter. The arguments rather reveal a blanket refusal to consider Sri Aurobindo’s avatarhood. Why would any sincere student of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother refuse to consider and research this possibility, especially given that Sri Aurobindo’s Siddhi Day in 1926 consisted of Krishna or Krishna consciousness descending into his body. Krishna of course is the 8th Avatar of Vishnu. Why do Mr. Chaki and others who toe the same line believe it is in the Integral Yoga community’s best interest to disassociate Sri Aurobindo from the Hindu tradition of Vishnu’s Dasavataras?

Lately I have been studying Sri Aurobindo’s symbol with its ascending and descending triangles bound together by a square which houses a lotus resting on seven waves. The Mother clearly describes this 9 petal lotus as ‘the Avatar of the Supreme'. It is the center of the ‘perfect manifestation’ which is presumably the Supramental Manifestation which Sri Aurobindo incarnated to establish. What I do not understand is how Mr. Chaki and others can miss this very prominent indication of Sri Aurobindo’s true position. Mr. Chaki writes that Sri Aurobindo and the Mother ‘never and nowhere stated that He was an Avatar of Vishnu.’ Well who in the world is indicated in his own symbol as ‘the Avatar of the Supreme – the lotus’ if not Sri Aurobindo, whose very name happens to mean ‘lotus’ (aravindha) in the Sanskrit language? How is it missed that ‘the Avatar of the Supreme’ is one and the same as the Avatar of Vishnu, whose names include parameshvarah – the Supreme Lord, as well as aravindaksha – Lotus-Eyed One.

Is it believable that Sri Aurobindo and the Mother did not understand the lotus as a well recognized symbol of Vishnu the Supreme Lord, and that they did not actually mean to convey via the symbol that Sri Aurobindo was actually ‘the Avatar of the Supreme’? A 9 petal lotus would certainly be an ingenious symbol for the 9th Avatar of Vishnu, the Supreme Lotus-Eyed Lord of the Cosmos, especially if his parents happened to have named him ‘lotus’. I for one do not imagine that Sri Aurobindo and the Mother were ignorant of these profound subtleties and correspondences. There is ample proof that the Mother knew exactly what Sri Aurobindo had accomplished, not only during his life as the 9th Avatar, but after his departure and return as the 10th. It is all 'written' methodically in the plan she gave of the Inner Chamber (see Chronicles of the Inner Chamber). But, similar to the persistent campaign to dislodge Sri Aurobindo from his position in the Line of Ten Avatars, the ruling camp at Auroville destroyed (or have attempted to destroy) all the means the Mother gave to recognize and affirm his avatarhood by that plan. Those who protest the loudest against Sri Aurobindo’s avatarhood, like those who support the distorted dimensions of the Mother’s Temple in Auroville, have (for whatever reasons) taken up the onerous life purpose of denying the terms of the Supramental Manifestation as it has actually presented itself, as it has actually unfolded. If they understood the methods the new creation utilizes for its self expression, this denial would be impossible.

Thereafter an intelligent exchange would be possible.
